The world is headed towards the apocalypse due to the ever expanding light-less realm that produces this monsters called Imashime. So what does the world do now? Well, send 8 kids out to the light-less realm to save the world.
Okay, that might not be entirely accurate, as the 8 participants in the plan are actually at least teenagers by the time they start their training. But the flashbacks do suggests that they seem to have ties to each other, as well as some prior experience with the light-less realm.
In any case, they get drafted into this special course to train them as mecha pilots to combat these monsters. But during one of their practical training runs, they encounter one such monster and they accidentally chance upon the reality that these monsters are born from human corpses and have their memories of the past retained. So yeah, zombies.
Make no mistake, the plot isn’t really anything new. There’s a lot of apocalyptic world settings out there, and this is just one of the many out there. But like most of them, M3 still manages to present a fairly interesting mystery. It still makes you ask what in the world is happening, why is this happening, and who are these random mysterious people.
But the show doesn’t really present any distinctive quality in itself at this point, seemingly content with just presenting the apocalyptic world. There is no clear major hook in the pilot episode: no flashy superpowers (it has creepy melodic ones), no fanservice (unless you count the stuff with the stalker-y girl), the art is just so-so (characters have weird eyelashes), etc. It could work in its favor, as the show may actually focus solely on the plot, but at this point we can’t tell, and that makes it slightly harder to sell this show.
So if you want some dark creepy mysterious show, M3 is right up your alley. Else, we’d probably need to see more to tell where the show is trying to go.

P.S.: This technically started just recently, so this article isn’t really late. The ones after this are, though.
