Shaft. Good ‘ol Shaft.
Shintaro Kisaragi is a NEET who hasn’t gone out of his room for 2 years already. But he’s not your average NEET. A year ago he received a mysterious mail that somehow installed an AI avatar in his machine. So now he’s got this shimeji-esque virtual girl running around his computer.
In fact, she’s mobile too!
But on one fine day, amidst Shintaro and Ene’s bantering (Ene is the virtual girl), soda spills on and kills his keyboard.
A NEET can’t survive without his computer. And as the looming holidays has all deliveries at a standstill, Shintaro is forced to actually go out to buy a keyboard.
But when it rains, it pours. The mall Shintaro visits ends up being held up by robbers.
But thanks to the help of some mysterious hostages, Shintaro manages to have Ene hack into the mall’s system to set them free.
With that said, I still have no idea what this show is about. But was I entertained? Damn right I was. Damn you Shaft.
As far as episode one is concerned, it reminds me so much of both Bakemonogatari and Durarara. It’s similar to Bakemonogatari in that Shintaro is very much like Araragi in his dialogue. Likewise much of the episode focused on Ene and Shintaro’s verbal banter, which was Bakemonogatari‘s bread and butter. The dynamics between the two is very much like Araragi and Shinobu.
On the other hand, it’s very similar to Durarara in the sense that it doesn’t really quite tell you clearly what is it about, thereby creating curiosity, but beautifully sets up an environment where an ensemble cast of quirky and possibly supernatural characters interact in a largely ordinary setting.
Were both of those shows good? Yes, they were. That’s why Mekakucity Actors makes a lot of us expect a lot from this show.
Rating: 8.5/10
P.S.: Ene is like Hatsune Miku on your pc.

Worth Watching? 😐
If you like Bakemonogatari and/or Durarara, it’s worth a shot.
After a few episodes this show is top of my list for this season. Bakemonogatari + Durarara! and by Shaft, can’t get much better.
