Summer 2012 – Joshiraku

They’re like stand-up comedian, only sitting down. So sit-down comedian?

Well, from the get-go this series opens with an attempt at meta-humor: Why are they making a show about girls talking in a dressing room. And really now, that’s pretty much what they are doing. They talk, and talk, and talk, and talk, and talk, and talk, and talk. Pretty typical for females, eh?

Someone did say that Joshiraku is a comedy show you will only get if you’re a native speaker of Japanese. From what I can tell, it had a lot of puns in there. That’s largely untranslatable, and so the humor is lost when it reaches us. So yeah, I guess this is a show not meant for us…

Sure, there were a couple of amusing moments, but it was hardly comedy to be reckoned with, at least for me. Oddly enough, the show attempts to advertise itself with “appreciate the cuteness of the girls.” So yeah, imagine K-ON! minus the music.
