iOS devices are synonymous with premium quality and excessive costs, which is a huge bonus for some and an even bigger negative for others, depending on your financial status. However, for the dedicated gamer, it’s not as bad as things first appear. I started gaming in the early 1990’s as a child, so I have seen everything from the Spectrum and Amiga, the Master System and NES, the GameBoy and the GameGear , all the way through to today’s preferred platforms and hardware.
Now (I don’t want to sound like an old man here but), back in my day we had to carry around a mobile phone and our GameBoy, which would cost anywhere in the region of £100-150, depending on whether you wanted a few games with it. My Nokia 3210 retailed at £199 when I bought it, so that’s £350 worth of stuff I was hauling around in 1999, which would cost £537 in today’s money. Now when you consider that a brand new iPhone 5S “only” costs £415, you’ll see that the pricing isn’t actually too bad — especially since you now only have to carry one device and don’t need a suitcase full of AA batteries.
Of course, that’s still a rather large sum of money but that’s unavoidable when dealing with anything that bares an Apple badge. If you don’t have the need for the phone and want a bigger screen then obviously the iPad would be the better solution, particularly for those games that have some form of on-screen gamepad, like online FPS NOVA 3 by serial developers Gameloft. It will also unlock the door to a host of games that are only available on the larger resolution devices, such as Hearthstone: Heroes of Warcraft that we took a good look at earlier in the year.
The added bonus with iOS gaming is that the device will still hold an awful lot of value when you’re done with it, which isn’t always the case with PC’s and consoles.

So, if you wake up one day and say to yourself “I want to sell my iPad“, you’ll be able to reclaim a significant amount of its total value. Selling it is extremely easy too, thanks to Apple’s marketing department. Even just popping it on eBay with a simple listing would yield a pretty good price, if you don’t mind waiting a couple of weeks to get your hands on the money.
All of this combined with the on-the-go gaming experience that it provides and the relatively cheap games that the App Store has on offer makes iOS gaming an incredible pick up and play platform that simply cannot be ignored. Besides, what would you rather be doing when you’re sitting in the doctors waiting room; read a leaflet that leaves you pondering your imminent death or lay waste to everything that moves on Gameloft’s Modern Combat ? Yeah, we thought so.
