The Razer Hammerhead looks great but the Razer Moray seems to be just the same but cheaper. Which do I get? I listen to plenty of hiphop, Jpop and eurobeat with the occasional metal thrown in on my iPhone and I’d like to use it on my vita also.
Hi there, Kimhatesrabbits! So you’re looking for a pair of gaming earbuds I assume but you’re going to use it for music primarily.
Razer Hammerhead vs Razer Moray, huh? This is a tough one as not all of us have the same level of discernment to audio and perception of quality varies from person to person. As an audio junkie though, my best advise is to NOT GET ANY OF THOSE RAZER in-ears. Surely the attractive acid green on black may turn heads but just like the Beats and Soul line of audio products, these are meant for show more than the quality of their audio.
If you are after excellent buds for music, I highly recommend getting a pair from Audio Technica, Sennheiser, Jays or JBL. You mentioned something about the Moray being cheaper so I am also guessing you are playing around the 50USD budget range since the Hammerhead Pro and Moray+ both play around the 70ish mark. In that case, we recommend checking out products from Phillips, SkullCandy and this might surprise you, but Tt eSports‘ Isurus are quite impressive for their sub-30USD pricing.
For your consideration are the following:
- Tt eSports Isurus (and Isurus R) – Affordable but impressive quality. Rich detail for something that costs so little. Has in-line mic controller.
- A-Jays One+ – Rich and detailed audio with a clear bassline. Also has in-line mic control.
- A-Jays Two – Highly-detailed bass cannons. Crisp and lush audio quality with powerful yet controlled bass. For your music style, definitely go with this.
- Phillips 3580 – Very cheap (around 20ish) and clear treble and controlled bass.
- Skullcandy Riot – Same as above but with a higher richness to vocals and heavier bass
You have plenty of options out there really and I highly advise you to not limit yourself to the “gaming” products. I’ve had the pleasure of owning many IEMs including the Moray+ and Hammerhead Pro and as far as looks go they are quite the looker but all that fades away once everyone gets used to seeing you with them on and the moment you start hearing much higher quality IEMs is the moment you’ll regret getting them.
TL;DR
If you are on a budget, get the A-Jays Two. It is bass-oriented and will jive well with your music tracks and will also play nicely with a lot of your games.
