iD software (the brainiacs behind FPS legends Doom and Quake) has officially released the Doom 3 source code under a GPL (General Public License) for the community to enjoy. The source code contains no game assets, only the code itself, but that won’t stop the community from creating brilliant games in the days and months to come.
The code is covered under EULA, and the shadow rendering technique known as “Carmack’s Reverse” has also been replaced due to legal issues. Nevertheless, expect brilliant (and silly) creations to come out of the woodwork.
