Valve is reporting great performance achievements in their OpenGL renderer with their recent port of Left 4 Dead 2 for Ubuntu Linux. This also comes along with the port of Steam client which will pave the way for Valve’s inevitable penetration into the open-source platform.
Aside from Left 4 Dead 2, Valve plans to port and optimize a list of its other games for Linux including Half Life, Counter Strike and Portal. This comes at a time when game developers are showing their disapproval of Windows 8. Will this help boost the adoption of Linux? We’ll have to wait for further developments to know but if Valve’s performance figures are an indication then chances are good that other devs might follow.
