The concept device in showcase at Computex is designated a WD Black but as the display signage states, it is a dual-drive and features a 128GB SSD on top of a 4TB capacity HDD in the same body. What’s new is the inclusion of the new SATA Express interface, available in the new Z97 chipset from Intel.
As covered by TweakTown, we can see the performance of the drive doing a speedy 695MB per second, a far cry from the mediocre WD Black2. Also stated in the TT coverage is Intel’s plan on moving away from SATAIII and making SATA Express more common place.
It is yet unknown what WD is planning for this supposed WD Black SATA Express device but taking the initial performance screen into account, we are seeing a very positive future for the drive.
