There’s a lot of storage solution out there and while the internal desktop market is a bit well-segmented, the portable storage market is a different beast altogether. While many would look at a product and see just the capacity and physical looks, those looking for something more specific tend to be a bit more stringent in what product they look for. We’ve taken a look at many Apple Mac here in the labs and this is the first we’re taking a look at a rugged Mac-targeted product. Another first is that this is the first product from Transcend that we’ll be looking at. Read on to find out more about the Transcend StoreJet 100 for Mac 2TB portable hard drive.

Closer Look
The Transcend StoreJet 100 for Mac only comes in 2TB capacity so there’s no comparing its thickness to smaller capacity models. Its a slimmer 2TB drive compared to others we’ve seen before in this market which is nice to see. Also a good touch is the rubber jacket that covers the main body of the StoreJet100. This drive is MIL-STD-810G 516.6-Transit Drop Test certified so its made to endure shocks. The drive uses USB3.0 and has no seal for this port so let me say it now that it’s not waterproof. A button is present for one-touch backup.
Performance
MAXIMUM POTENTIAL PERFORMANCE
ATTO Disk Benchmark benchmarks a drive’s read and write speeds with increasing file sizes and graphs them.
CRYSTAL DISKMARK
Crystal Disk Mark is storage benchmarking software was developed by “hiyohiyo” of Japan, and is available for free. Crystal Disk Mark measures sequential, and random read/write speeds of storage devices.
REAL WORLD COPY TESTS
We’ve taken our compression test files, a collection of images, documents and other files ranging from 1KB to 50MB amounting to 3,310 files for 3.34GB and a single, large 12GB file. We’re posting the raw transfer results for your reference.
Conclusion
We performed our test under our Windows testing environment which should give us access to our standard benchmark suite. Out of the box, teh StoreJet 100 is pre-formatted with HFS+ file system and is compatible with Time Machine straight out of the package.
Going over the good points of the drive, performance is excellent and demonstrates good use of the USB3.0 interface. While it isn’t breaking any performance records, its transfer-rate is enough for any usage scenario most specifically just serving as an expansion for backup storage. In terms of looks, the drive is themed to match the color of Apple products to a certain degree and its rugged qualifications make it a durable option for those concerned about randomly dropping their drives for whatever reason. While it isn’t the most scientific of tests, we did drop the drive a couple of times (ok, 20 or more times but who’s counting) a couple of feet from our desk and while the plastic parts do get beat-up a bit, the rubber jacket does a good job protecting the main body from the shock of the drop.
At $199, its a bit on the pricey-side but we’ve scouted around and saw prices go as low as $99. That’s a really good price range for a rugged 2TB drive and given the performance we’ve seen, a solid performing solution as well.
