To put things in perspective, I was a big Crash Team Racing fan back in the days of the Playstation. Me and my cousins would often play round after round after round of CTR with the multi-tap then and whoever loses would be replaced. Since I didn’t own a N64 back then CTR was the next best thing and the game did deliver since I still have recollections of epic battles we’ve had to this day.

Ever since then I never really touched a karting game. Then here comes ModNation Racers, a game that’s been heavily marketed by PS spokesperson Kevin Butler (which sadly didn’t make a good case for me, regardless of how epic he is).

The game’s pretty tight as a karting game. The controls are simple enough and the game’s physics engine is easy to get a grip on. The weapon system is simple enough and the variety of weapons in your arsenal is reminiscent of CTR more than Mario Kart. The game’s boost meter provides the oomp in most races because it doubles as a speed boost and an offense-defense meter. With the boost meter you can well- boost and you can also do sidewipes and stomps which is ModNation Racers’ version of kart based attacks. The boost meter also can serve as your defense because you can summon shields to protect yourself from environment and player based attacks, as long as you have enough on it.

Racing on the other hand is a challenge. ModNation Racers has a Dynamic Game Difficulty Balancing system in place to ensure that your races are as fast-paced as you’d like them. I can personally attest to that since most of my race finishes would only have a millisecond difference. The only time that I had more than a second gap with the second placer is that when I pushed the boost till the meter’s gone just before I zoomed through the finish line. In fact most of my wins were hair-raisers that I actually would often breathe a sigh of relief upon race completion. I haven’t even started with the race goals you need to accomplish to get more stuff to customize your boombox (kart) and your racer.

So moving on from the game’s race difficulties- I’m going to have to focus on the game’s coup de grace which is mainly it’s customization features. ModNation Racers’ customization feature is very robust which reminds me so much of Little Big Planet on the PSP. The map creation feature is also very robust and you can almost do everything on it. You still need to “study’ the map creation process though since with everything you can do on the map, it’d be hard to start everything from scratch without any plan whatsover, unless your an artist or you have the gift of creation.

Overall, ModNation Racers is a game that you shouldn’t take lightly. On one hand you have a very engaging and challenging solo play and on the other you have a very well made customization system. I wasn’t able to really delve into the game’s multiplayer feature since there aren’t a lot of ModNation players out there for me to play against with. Going online is a laugh as well since the internet connection here is a laugh too.

The other saving grace for ModNatioN Racers is the game’s story mode. Even if the storyline isn’t the best there is, you’d have characters which seem to be typecasted from several pop culture references (I want to say Celebrity Deathmatch). ModNation Racers is a game that can be at par with CTR and Mario Kart- but it’s not good enough.

Still it’s a prettu decent karting game and if you have friends to play it with- I’m sure it’d double the fun.

Before anything else I’d like to say, Sony, well played sir *slow clap* well played.

So moving on, in the Sony event at Tokyo today, the company FINALLY revealed it’s newest portable platform, the Next Generation Portable or NGP. To start things off, here’s what the unit looks like:

Basically almost all the rumors about the unit are true. The game runs on the Android OS (POSSIBILITIES!), it has two analog sticks, not nubs, sticks. It has 3G and wireless connectivity. It has an OLED touchscreen which is bigger than the PSP. It has a tilt-sensitive SIXAXIS controls and has a front and back camera mount plus the ever notorious touch sensitive back panel.

Here’s the rundown of some of the tech specs coming from The Playstation Blog:

• Multi-touch 5-inch organic light emitting display (OLED) as the front display
• Multi-touch pad on the rear of the device
• Dual analog sticks
• Two cameras (front and rear)
• Software titles on small, dedicated flash memory-based cards
• Three motion sensors, gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass
• Wi-Fi and 3G network connectivity
• PlayStation Network access, including ““LiveArea™”, “Near” and “Activity” log features Trophy Support
• NGP will be able to play PSP titles, minis, PS one classics, video and comics from the PlayStation Store.

Now, the technical specs:

The unit is also backwards compatible since there was a demo of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd during the presentation. Also, another surprise is that Uncharted is coming to the NGP. Sony boasts that the NGP runs at par with the PS3.

The NGP also doesn’t support UMD too (which as Billy states was bound to happen).

The question now is that if they’re actual ports of their PS3 versions or the are new games altogether is still pretty moot. The press event also didn’t disclose the price or even the battery life of the unit. They did report however that the NGP is going to be sold this holiday (at Japan at least). Also as a side note, Kojima announced that he will be showing more come E3 while he was showing an MGS4 reel during the event.

So it would seem that people will be looking forward to Sony’s presentation in E3…. so let’s wait and see!

• Dragon Age is keeping me addicted nowadays. I’ve been going through a lot of side quests aside from the main storyline just to level up my character and getting the corresponding awards ever since I got it.

• Ever since I got my first desktop PC.

• Ultima VII I think. That was the game bundled with the desktop PC I bought.

Your proudest gaming moment?

• Hmmm, each time I get to finish a game. Nothing can beat that satisfaction.

Preferred Game Genre: (mmorpg, fps, rpg, action, etc.)

• RPG, there’s something about roleplaying that really fascinates me. I get to finish a game much more quickly if it’s in this genre. I’d get so caught up in that game’s world and I can easily waste away hours relishing the game.

Preferred Gaming Platform: (PC, consoles or handheld)

• I prefer handheld because of the portability and the ability to play with friends anywhere but of course the PC comes to a close second.

If you were given a choice for a free console what would you choose from the three? Wii, Ps3 or Xbox360?

• PS3! I’ve never liked the Wii and the Xbox360 is too buggy based from what I heard. The PS3 has more appealing features and perks plus more quality game titles to go gaga about.

How about if you were given a free handheld what would you choose? Nintendo DS or PSP?

• If I didn’t have a PSP right now, I would still choose it. I personally think the games are better and more geared toward a mature audience.

Are you more of an online or offline gamer?

• More of an offline gamer, what turned me off with online gaming before was one I didn’t have a decent internet connection and now that I do, sometimes girls are treated a little more different and often not in a nice way. Lots of pervs out there unfortunately.

Let’s say you were given the choice to change the world into one of the games you played before (or you are currently playing), what game would it be?

• KOTOR! Wouldn’t it be cool to be a Jedi and have a purple light saber? Hahaha

If you can change yourself into one of the many heroines in any game, who would you change into?

• Aribeth from Neverwinter Nights, even though she eventually became a villain, she still was a pretty powerful Paladin and one of the most recognizable characters in the game series.

If you were turned into a gaming console what console would you want to be turned into, who do you want to own you and why?

• A purple vinyl clad PS3 owned by a guy who will treat me like I’m the most prized treasure in the world….why? because even though I’d be like any other PS3, the extra customs will make me very unique thus something that should be valued.

What are your other hobbies aside from gaming?

• Blogging has become a pretty intense hobby for me, well it started out as that and now it’s turning into a passion. Aside from this, I still pretty much doodle and sketch a lot and soon will venture out into photography.

Why do you think pinay gamers rock?

• We rock because our diversity makes us very hard to read and that makes one formidable opponent, plus we can beat you guys and still look pretty!

• Games are not just for kids anymore, so keep in touch with your inner child. Keep on gaming and play nice!
