DRAM Prices Spike Due to AI Demand

Memory prices are once again on the upswing as global DRAM suppliers raise contract pricing in response to mounting demand from artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure and cloud data centers. The surge, led by major players like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, is expected to ripple through the consumer market in the coming weeks, affecting both DDR4 and DDR5 memory modules.

Global Price Hike Led by AI Expansion

According to a report from TrendForce, Samsung and SK Hynix have lifted DRAM contract prices by up to 30% in Q4 2025 (local PH pricing expected surge by up to ~40%). This move follows a series of long-term supply deals secured with hyperscale data center operators, who are stockpiling high-capacity DRAM and HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) for AI training workloads.

The spike has been described as one of the most significant price jumps since the pandemic-era shortages. Industry executives cited by ITDaily point to “unprecedented cross-sector demand,” with DRAM, NAND flash, and SSDs all trending upward simultaneously – a rare convergence even in a cyclical market like semiconductors.

A Perfect Storm for Memory and Storage

Reports from Tom’s Hardware and Wccftech highlight how this surge extends beyond DRAM. NAND suppliers and HDD manufacturers are also signaling price adjustments of 20–30%, driven by overlapping AI and cloud buildouts. With hyperscale customers consuming vast quantities of memory and storage, suppliers have reallocated capacity toward higher-margin enterprise products, tightening the flow of consumer-grade memory into the market.

Tom’s Hardware describes the situation as a “perfect storm” – a combination of increased demand, reduced inventory, and scaled-back production of legacy DRAM (notably DDR4) as manufacturers shift their fabrication lines toward next-generation technologies.

Chinese DRAM Makers Will Feel the Pressure

While Chinese manufacturers have previously benefited from the global inventory overflow, that advantage is now fading. These firms source key wafers, tools, and materials from the same ecosystem as their South Korean and Taiwanese counterparts.

As the global supply tightens, Chinese DRAM makers will face the same constraints and rising procurement costs, making it difficult to maintain their earlier price advantage. Moreover, with Western and AI-oriented enterprises securing bulk supply agreements, smaller or newer entrants — including Chinese brands targeting consumer DDR4/DDR5 markets — will find themselves competing for the same limited pool of components.

Legacy DDR4 Still Affected

Interestingly, while DDR5 remains the focus of next-generation PC and server builds, DDR4 is experiencing some of the steepest short-term price movements. As production for DDR4 continues to wind down globally, stable demand from both enterprise and consumer segments is colliding with shrinking supply lines.

This means that users building or maintaining older systems could see DDR4 prices climb faster than DDR5 – a rare reversal of the typical generational pricing curve.

What It Means for PC Builders and Gamers

In the Philippines, local retailers have already begun adjusting memory prices across DDR4 and DDR5 kits. Channel distributors report that the increases are modest for now, but they expect further adjustments before the end of Q4.

For PC builders, particularly those planning upgrades or new rigs, now may be the most cost-efficient time to buy. If your next build involves a platform change — especially from DDR4 to DDR5 — this might be the right window to secure modules before pricing hardens in November and December.

Quick Tips for Filipino Buyers:

  • Buy early: If you’re planning a RAM or storage upgrade before year-end, don’t delay as these are highly universal in most builds.
  • Compare platforms: DDR5 may offer better long-term value if the price gap narrows further.
  • Watch bundles: Retailers may start offering kits with bundled SSDs to move older inventory before the next price wave.
  • Avoid grey imports: With tightening supply, some sellers may push unverified stock – check warranty coverage carefully as your warranty support will be affected.

The Bottom Line

The current DRAM price rally is not just another short-lived fluctuation. It’s part of a broader industry shift driven by AI, enterprise computing, and the rebalancing of semiconductor priorities. Both DDR4 and DDR5 modules are caught in the mix, and Chinese manufacturers will also feel the strain as they compete for the same upstream materials and foundry capacity.

For consumers especially in the Philippines, the key takeaway is simple: check your options and consider timing.

Rising prices for SSDs and RAM are primarily due to increased demand for high-performance memory and storage from the AI sector, combined with controlled production by major manufacturers. After a period of low prices in 2023 caused by oversupply, memory and flash producers slashed their output to stabilize the market and avoid further losses.

key factors are driving the price increases:

Massive AI demand:AI and cloud data centers are consuming an enormous share of the world’s memory and storage output, creating a supply squeeze.AI workloads require massive quantities of high-bandwidth memory (HBM),DDR4 & DDR5 RAM,and high-capacity NAND flash for servers and training models. This high-end enterprise demand leaves fewer available components for the consumer market.

    Production cuts:

Major flash memory and DRAM manufacturers like Samsung,SK Hynix, and Micron, drastically cut their production in 2023 to combat falling prices caused by an inventory glut. This led to dwindling inventory levels and set the stage for price increases once demand recovered.

    Market cyclicality:
The memory market is historically cyclical, with boom-and-bust periods of oversupply and undersupply. After a down cycle, rising prices are a natural but amplified, and part of the pattern.prices bottomed out in mid-2023 and have been rising since.

    Geopolitical tensions:
Ongoing trade disputes and tariffs, particularly between the U.S and China (yeah kinda sucks but this is happen) have created uncertainty and disrupted supply chains for critical electronic components.with export controls on advanced semiconductor manufacturing technology have further complicated global production.

    Forecast for 2025:
Memory and SSD prices are expected to continue rising, though the pace may fluctuate throughout the year.

First half of 2025: Some analysts predict a brief, small price drop for NAND products and SSD’s during the first and second quarters.

    Second half of 2025:
A significant price hike is projected, with NAND and SSD prices expected to rise 19–30% in the last six months of the year. For example, contract prices for DRAM and NAND surged by 15–20% in the fourth quarter of 2025,according to a September 2025 report.

This is happened around the world, when supply outstrips demand, prices fall, and memory producers slow their memory production. Now,demand is high and prices are rising.as prices rise, memory production will (eventually) increase, and the cycle will start anew.

    Cost Comparisons
    Main memory is about $4.50 and $5.50 per GB (DDR4 & DDR5/LPDDR5 & LPDDR5X)
SSD storage is about $18 per GB (Depends on the manufacturer)
Hard disk storage is about $2.33 per GB.
NAND storage is about $35 per GB (depending on manufacturer and size of)

Come on man,I’ve tried to tell all the fanpages, even you guys, but no one cares…

“Yeah, who cares about that with random guys using english word??”

I’m not forcing everyone, but just telling and what the response too.

Even some people like y’all laughing and never trust that, but at the last,y’all surprised about the Storage pricing.
