Synopsis
On one fateful day, Sogo, a young mining hobbyist, manages to find a rare crystal. He doesn’t unearth it though, as the crystal arrives to him as a COMET CRASHING DOWN ON HIM.
He miraculously survives, because, well, it’s a magical comet! I think. Anyway, he goes back to town shortly after, happy to find a loot that may or may not be related to his mother’s work. Along the way, while running morning errands, he chances upon Kaon, a female friend of his. Before you can even say, “I smell a ship sailing there,” Kaon quickly boards Sogo’s hover board, and orders him to quickly run away.
Run away from what? Kaon is running away from her fiance, whom she doesn’t like and is only being forced upon her by her family. So all aboard the Sogo-Kaon ship!
Anyway, Roman, the said fiance, gives chase, and does the most stupid thing you could possibly do: He uses his car to bump around Sogo’s hover board, sending both Sogo and Kaon falling down a deep deep cavern.
And somehow, one way or another, after falling down a really really deep trench, THEY BOTH SURVIVE UNSCATHED. I swear, the kids in this world are probably indestructible.
Anyway, since this is such a fateful day, it just so happens that some company is doing some very important, and perhaps mystical, excavation at the general area where Sogo and Kaon fell. The excavation triggers some magical reaction, and as it turns out, the place where Sogo and Kaon is at is actually beside a mystical underground lake…
… which is housing a huge ass rare crystal…
… that of course is gonna react to the comet crystal Sogo got earlier.
And then boom! Sogo gains a mysterious sleeping fairy.
All’s not well though as soon a mecha shows up, bursting through the walls, chasing after Sogo.
But it’s not really a true mecha show if the good guys don’t have their own, right? So when Sogo finally gets cornered by the enemy, his hand flashes some cosmic red light which, probably, summons an ally mecha that makes quick work of the enemy.
And thus all the pieces are set: An accidental hero. A mysterious ethereal girl. And a sexy menacing robot.
Review
I’m totally liking what I’m seeing so far. While Iron-Blooded Orphans carry a sense of gritty mecha, Comet Lucifer presents us a different approach in showing as a more fantastical one. So while there’s clear overlap in their appeals, there’s enough distinction between the two to ensure they don’t really infringe on each others’ draw. So in that sense, we’ve been blessed with both a real robot anime and a super robot anime this season.
Moreover, I really liked how Comet Lucifer seems to be taking its sweet time in being elaborate with its presentation. Sogo takes a few good seconds just driving around town, allowing us a glimpse of the makeup of the town. The shot of them being stuck inside the cavern is zoomed far out, giving us a better feel of the predicament they are in. So even though the art of Comet Lucifer isn’t exactly the most polished you’ll see, at least the presentation tries to make up for it.
Another small detail I really liked was the show’s subtle fanservice. It’s not in your face like other shows, and the story doesn’t actually stop in order for fanservice to have its moments. It’s just there as the story moves along, subtle enough that you can actually miss it if you’re not really into those things. Little things like the posture of Kaon as she rides behind Sogo, especially how the only way she won’t fall off while making a face with her hands is to actually grip Sogo with her inner thigh…
Perhaps I’m overreading the scene. But as a fan I was subtly serviced and that’s not a bad thing.
Waifu Index
You have two choices here. You can opt for the mysterious ethereal girl who is probably halfway a loli (Felia), or you can go for Kaon, the sexy (childhood?) friend who will probably leave her fiance for Sogo. Oh should I mention that the hair clip reminds me of Lacus/Meer? Either way you probably can’t go wrong.
But if you want to go hard mode, the girl form the bread store looks fine as well.

please, be good.
is there a lacus-like waifu here?
Kaon is not exactly Lacus-like, but there are some similarities. Most notable is the fact that she is already engaged to someone else. The hair pin is also quite reminiscent of Lacus.
engaged to the heroine?
Kaon, the girl, is engaged to another guy. She most likely has a thing for Sogo, the main character. It’s reminiscent of how Lacus began as someone engaged to Athrun but ended up with Kira.
i think i know where this engagement is going… hehe ^^
