This feels like a lighter, more fun version of Dusk Maiden of Amnesia.
Juugo just moved in into this Sanae Island after being disowned by his dad. So like any broke student, he goes off to rent a cheap room. While the room looks pretty normal, it’s cheap because it’s haunted.
The room houses the spirit of Ryuugajou Nanana who was murdered in that room 10 years ago. Not only would the fact that a murder occur there long ago drive the rent down, the presence of this ghost lowers it even further. But as Juugo is broke, he has no choice to accept the living conditions, after putting up a bit of a fight.
It’s not a fair fight, as Nanana can touch him but Juugo can’t touch her by the way…
But soon enough Juugo finds this notebook in his room entitled Nanana Manual. It’s basically a manual of how to deal with Nanana, listing down her weaknesses, her favourites and whatnot.
Most importantly, though, is it drops a few hints about this so called Nanana Collection. As it turns out, Nanana is one of the teenagers who built this Sanae island. To be more exact, Nanana was the one who raised funds to build it by uncovering several treasures of unknown origin. And that Nanana Collection is the cream of the crop from those treasures, having some kind of supernatural powers of their own.
And so suddenly, we’ve got ourselves an anime about treasure hunting, adventures, thieves and detectives.
The show does feel like it’s a mixed vegetable of sorts, pulling elements from various genres all over. Whether its mixture will work is something we have to see later on. But what works for this show is that it actually has an interesting plot it’s trying to tell, both on the mystery of Nanana’s murderer as well as the thing about those treasures.
What doesn’t work for this show is the seemingly slapped on fanservice that feels out of place. I can understand the arm-bar scene, but the fanservice from the landlady felt forced.
