It doesn’t take a lot to figure out that we sure love ourselves some basketball and online gaming. Just go take a look around, you’ll see half courts squeezed into nearly every neighborhood in Manila and an internet cafe just as frequently as you’d spot a sari-sari store. With that in mind, NBA 2K Online couldn’t have arrived at a better time. The PC-exclusive arm of the venerable basketball sim series recently had a closed beta test, and as of today, moving on to the open phase.
NBA 2K Online won’t have a shortage of modes during this period. As of the press release, the current build available to the public will include MyCareer, 3v3 Streetball, and 1v1 NBA Matchup. MyCareer, a series fixture, sees your created player rising through the ranks in the NBA and rubbing elbows with the stars just as frequently as you’ll be going up against them. Looking for a quick pick-up game? 3v3 Streetball is there to scratch that itch. Form a team of three, and take on an opposing team in a fast-paced engagement in an urban setting. And finally, there’s 1v1 NBA Matchup, a more traditional setup where you pick an NBA team, and go up against all comers. This is somewhat similar to Moneyball official website where you can play fantasy NBA. Legacy teams like the ’96 Bulls, ’91 Lakers, and ’86 Celtics will be at your disposal.
Rounding out the offerings will be the Item Mall, which was initially available in the closed phase, but is now open to the public, with players able to buy customization items using credits from top-up cards.
Local distributor X-Play Online Games has big plans for the game. Product manager Bryan Dy says they’re aiming to establish NBA 2K Online as the “Liga ng Bayan” as a testament of fostering our innate competitiveness and love for basketball.
