The idea that a console may not be a great platform for competitive video gaming is as outdated as erroneous. However, this is an ingrained belief in western gaming communities that you cannot have real competition on anything but PC. This is partly true, but it’s mostly wrong. Many gamers today make a name for themselves, competing on consoles and mobile platforms.
With the arrival of the Steam Deck in February 2022, we can see the tide shifting once again and more people choosing handheld and alternative-to-PC devices as their go-to gaming station, and that’s great news. In fact, many gamers today love to bet on esport that is played on mobile devices.
Need proof? We have proof. Games such as Honor of King, Arena of Valor, Mobile Legends Bang Bang are already grabbing many eyeballs, and they are likely to continue being some of the most worthwhile esports games out there. People interested in these games are both the gamers who enjoy the handiness of using a handheld device to play and the fans who can appreciate the level and depth of the skill put in big plays.
Depth of the Experience
Do not trust anyone who takes you that consoles are restrictive in terms of how far you can take your esports experience. While you will perhaps be a little more constricted in your camera angles and movement patterns, this does not mean that consoles truly “restrict you.”
Remember, they are a meta world in which there are different rules of physics. Who is to say that those rules aren’t just different? And so, console gamers have a cavern of skillfulness to probe.
Only those most talented can make it far, and the truth is that many console gamers can easily take on their PC counterparts. The basic skills are already built-in, including muscle memory, reflexes, and the strategic thought and prowess you need to take your gameplay to the next level.
Put another way, the best console or mobile esports players will continue to be very good at the game they have chosen to specialize in, even when they may have to adapt to some unique conditions that are not necessarily present in all platforms and at all times.
Players can advance and evolve their gameplay regardless of the platform, and the depth of the experience precisely makes consoles such a great fit for esports. You may have your camera angles limited to certain angles or following certain rules, but this doesn’t mean you should necessarily stop to excel just because you are using a console or a gaming phone and not a PC setup.
Actual Tournaments and Fans
If you think that consoles are not fit for the esports experience, you will have to remind yourself that the Call of Duty League is played exclusively on consoles. There is no way to add anything but. In fact, even if PC would be used as the setups, you would still have to compete using a controller – it’s just the rules of the competition, and they are great if you ask us.
The same applies to Fighting Games Community. FGC titles are some of the most exciting to watch out there, and this is not by chance. Fans would come from all over the US to have a chance to attend events such as Evo. It reunites the world’s finest FGC gamers, which is always great. But what’s even greater is the fact that there is a very good reason for that to be the case – there is a skill in console gaming.
