Guild Wars 2 War Journal: World versus World

Writer’s Note: This is just NOT our official review of the game, that will come later on. This is rather my own experience playing the game

With three weeks into the game, I’d like to talk about my experience in taking part in the end-game content for Guild Wars 2, World versus World.

Basically, here’s the rundown of what WvW is:

World versus World (also known as WvW, WvWvW, World PvP) is a Player versus Player game mode where players from three different servers, or worlds, battle in the Mists. It features open-world combat on four large maps with up to several hundreds of players per map. In World versus World, players can besiege structures such as Keeps and Towers with siege weapons, battle over resources, and win rewards for their world.

      – Guild Wars 2 Wiki

So with describing what it is pegged, I’d like to focus now on the experience of taking part in WvW. My first ever foray into server – server killing is when I was still around level 40 since our guild master (I belong to Urge btw) called us to help. Being the curious little asura guardian that I am I decided to jump into the borderlands we were trying to dominate.

What I first noticed upon arrival as that I was already at level 80 with the help of the server boost since everyone participating the WvW should be at that level. As expected, I was hardly any help in relegating damage since I only had level 40 equips making me practically useless in actual PvP encounters. So instead of being a useless gawker, I decided to be one of the many “server pack mules”, serving the Blackgate server as a supply runner. Providing the necessary supplies to repair, build and upgrade whatever it is needed by the people.

Being a supply pack mule is not as prestigious or fun, I soon realized the importance of people at least delegating the time to bring the badly needed supplies to raiding parties. There have been moments that a wave of invaders were repelled from one of our towers when me and a fellow asuran arrived with the necessary supplies to finish the ballista our fellow BG comrades were preparing.

WvW in Guild Wars 2 is one of those features that I actually liked because it allows lowbies to participate WvW in whatever capacity they can, and in my case, aside from “server pack mule”, I was the enemy activity reporter and straggler clean-up crew. While it’s not as prestigious as the “person who took down so and so”, or, the “leader who took stole the garrison from this server”. Every effort and every time allocated helping out the server would in turn be useful to us in general.

I also liked the fact that tactics comes into play in WvW. You can’t keep on “zerging” (GW2 ref. to “mobbing”) areas and hope that you can take down a garrison, keep or tower. In fact, there have been a lot of times that we were wiped out right after we bust through the gates of a garrison just because we stormed in without thinking and we all died via arrow cart and ballista fire.

Proper management of troops and a sound strategic strategy is pretty important in WvW, making each and everyone participating, (regardless of equipment you have)  an important factor in WvW supremacy.

I know I said in my previous post that I’d discuss about being a completionist in Guild Wars 2, but adding it here would only lengthen this already long post about WvW, so that would probably be for the next War Journal post.
