From the earlier generations of gaming, a company called SEGA topped the console world and they had this endearing character named “Sonic the Hedgehog†that also became the flagship of their titles. If you are on this site then you probably know what I’m talking about.
Sonic the Hedgehog has taken numerous changes to keep up with the times and still uphold Sega’s legacy even though it’s not so strong compared when the company still produced consoles. Sega released various Sonic games from different themes (which sadly most had bad reviews) to the tried and tested remakes such as the up and coming Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 just so the Blue Blur’s legacy wouldn’t die. Even the fans tried to help out to maintain Sonic’s reputation by making fan made games such as Sonic Fan Remix.
My review in Sonic’s revival in general is somewhat mixed. I agree with a lot of the older generation’s opinion that you still can’t beat the original. Older Sonic games still posses that charm that the newer versions can’t quite get yet. The thrill of holding the button to witness a speedy blue hedgehog still amazes me. I have yet to see the new Sonic game to see whether Sega can get the classic groove back to this old-timer character.
At the same time I am amazed how the new and different Sonic games turn out. Yes it is old news that these games aren’t doing well with the critics but as a long time Sonic-fan, I get excited looking at my favourite character from different perspectives. I can honestly say I enjoy these new games even though they aren’t as good compared to the 90’s era and still play them numerous times.
As for the fan-made games, the good ones are mostly produced by old-generation fans like me. I guess the reason for this is because they became adults and are now computer experts; also because they grew up with Sonic and know his signature moves.

Sonic the Hedgehog games are well-loved by young and old alike. I do admit defeat it will not par to Mario now by a long-shot as it used to but I think Sonic pretty much held his ground. I’m sure he will remain timeless as long as the fans remember him and the remakes are decent. So please check out some Sonic games out there if you have time to kill. A little nostalgia doesn’t hurt anyone.

For the most part I liked Sonic better than Mario. The Super Mario Brothers was just a franchise that was “overly milked” to the point that it was too much for gamers like me to continue to stomach. Sonic on the other hand was more of the game that I liked due to the fast paced action that always kept you on your toes.
that’s the thing that I liked about sonic really- the fast paced roundabout way of defeating the robots ze fat ol’ doctor unleashes to the world
Hands down, Sonic 2 was my favorite of the core Genesis/Mega Drive games. Great sense of speed and overall level design, topped off with an amazing soundtrack. Some may debate about how horrible the Metropolis Zone was, but I liked how punishing it was before and how it preceded the somewhat relaxing Sky Chase Zone.
A friend of mine also knows the Super Sonic cheat by heart, too.
Not to acid rain on anyone’s parade here, but I’ve always had a hard time liking Sonic games (even the “good” 2d ones). I did spend considerable amount of time “giving them chance” and I like their music, and play even the portable iterations (most recently Sonic Rush), but somehow they just never click.
To me the gameplay is one hell of a contradiction, like developers are saying “Look, Sonic runs really fast! Isn’t it cool?! So RUN FORTH AND MULTIPLY YOUR RINGS THEN BUMP INTO ODDLY PLACED ENEMIES/SPIKES btw there are collectibles littered all over each levels. What, you want to collect them? Fine, but in that case you won’t be running then *twiddle thumbs*”
And that’s really my problem with every sonic games. At least Mario’s cool abilities HELP you find secret areas, not burden you from them.
