Blizzard used the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony in Anaheim to confirm that StarCraft is coming back, and not as a real-time strategy game. The new title carries the plain StarCraft name with no numeral attached, and Blizzard is positioning it as an open-world, story-driven shooter set in the same universe the RTS games built. The reveal came with a cinematic called Dominion and a release target that Blizzard’s press materials list as North American Spring 2030, which puts it roughly four years out from the announcement.

The franchise has been dormant on the release front since StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void in 2015, followed by the Nova Covert Ops mission packs in 2016 and StarCraft: Remastered in 2017. A StarCraft shooter has been the subject of persistent reporting for years, including a version that was reportedly shelved before this one took shape.

What is locked in and what is not: Blizzard has confirmed the game, the genre, the project lead, and a Spring 2030 release target. It has not announced platforms, a price, a subtitle, an engine, or any test or beta program. Treat 2030 as a target rather than a date.

What Blizzard Showed

The reveal was carried by the Dominion announce cinematic rather than gameplay. It follows a Terran Marine on the ground as an ambush unfolds, leaning on the grounded, military-industrial tone the franchise has used for its Terran material since 1998. Onscreen text in the cinematic reads “THE SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF THE DOMINION ANSWERED THE CALL WHEN MANKIND NEEDED THEM MOST.” No gameplay footage, user interface, or combat systems were shown during the opening ceremony.

Hay framed the project onstage in terms of perspective, describing it as “an open-world shooter where every step is earned, not from above, but down in the mud, in the fire.” He also described the team as “a team built with one purpose, with one goal, to return to a universe forged in interstellar war,” and said the goal is “honoring the past, its tone, its truth, but with an opportunity to push beyond it.”

Who Is Leading the New Project

  • Project lead (Dan Hay): Spent his career at Ubisoft Montreal shaping the Far Cry franchise from Far Cry 3 through Far Cry 6, serving as creative director on Far Cry 5 and executive producer across the series. Reports from the show describe his current role as general manager and creative director on the StarCraft project.
  • Prior Blizzard assignment: Hay joined Blizzard in 2022 and was attached to a survival game project, reported under the working name Odyssey, which Blizzard cancelled in January 2024 during the wider Microsoft layoffs.
  • Developer: Blizzard Entertainment. The company has not named a separate internal studio or external co-development partner for the title.

Keeping up with Timeline

Coverage out of the show places the story in the Koprulu Sector roughly 70 years after the events of StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void, with the Terran Dominion facing a resurgent Zerg Swarm. Blizzard has not published a detailed story synopsis, so we are treating that framing as reported rather than confirmed. The cinematic itself references the Dominion directly and puts a Marine at the center of the action, which is consistent with a Terran-led entry point into the setting.

What’s next

With a 2030 target, Blizzard has given itself a long runway, and the shape of the game will be set by whatever the first gameplay showing looks like rather than by the cinematic. The franchise hub at the official StarCraft site currently covers StarCraft: Remastered and StarCraft II only, with no page yet for the new title. Full BlizzCon programming and panel details are at the official BlizzCon site. We will update as Blizzard details platforms and systems.
