Sucker Punch Productions has officially lifted the veil on Ghost of Yōtei, the next evolution of its samurai action franchise—and this time, it’s built entirely around player freedom, brutal combat, and a haunting tale of revenge. Unveiled during PlayStation’s June State of Play, the 18-minute deep dive gave fans their first true look at what sets Ghost of Yōtei apart, not just from its predecessor Ghost of Tsushima, but from every open-world title before it.

And the results are staggering.

Meet Atsu – The Relentless Onryō

At the heart of Ghost of Yōtei is Atsu, a mercenary driven not by honor, but by vengeance. Sixteen years after the brutal murder of her family, she returns to Ezo—a dangerous frontier at the edge of Japan—on a mission to eliminate the Yōtei Six, a ruthless gang whose legend now stains the land.

Locals believe Atsu is an Onryō, a vengeful ghost, and as she fights her way across the region, that legend grows—affecting how enemies and the world respond to her.

Total Exploration Freedom – With Meaning

Sucker Punch has built Ghost of Yōtei around exploration without restriction. Rather than checklist-based progression, the game invites players to choose their path, uncovering leads, interrogating foes, and tracking storylines using a clue-card system that lets you catalog your own journey.

Areas of Ezo are shaped by the rumors you follow:

  • Track the Oni to uncover flame-scorched battlefields with traditional samurai combat encounters.

  • Follow Kitsune whispers to snow-covered forests teeming with deception and ambush-heavy ninja combat.

It’s not just about filling a map—it’s about choosing the kind of experience you want next.

Combat Built on Cinematic Precision

Combat in Ghost of Yōtei isn’t just refined—it’s reborn.

Every weapon choice matters. Whether it’s the traditional katana, the heavy ōdachi, the agile kusarigama, or dual blades, Atsu must choose her tools carefully depending on the enemy. Blades clash with weight and intention—this is combat that demands timing, positioning, and adaptation.

Enemies can knock your weapon away. If you’re fast, you can disarm them in return.

Ranged options like kunai, bombs, and blinding powders add layers of tactical versatility, allowing players to switch between stealth, chaos, or full-frontal brutality on the fly.

A Living World That Responds to You

Progress through the world and your reputation as a ghost grows. Higher bounties draw more powerful enemies. But Atsu can flip the system—hunting bounties of her own for coin and gear.

Campsites serve as dynamic hubs, replacing traditional menus. From here, Atsu can rest, upgrade weapons, receive quests from allies, or simply enjoy a moment of peace under the stars. Sucker Punch’s shift to a character-driven upgrade system ensures you’re always immersed—never lost in clunky menus.

Style Meets Storytelling

Players can discover and equip new gear sets that support stealth, ranged, or melee builds. Everything—from armor to weapons—can be customized for both performance and visual flair.

Sucker Punch also continues its celebration of classic cinema:

  • Kurosawa Mode returns with black-and-white fidelity.

  • Miike Mode adds blood-slicked close-range camera angles.

  • Watanabe Mode, directed by Samurai Champloo’s Shinichirō Watanabe, offers a lo-fi hip-hop twist with original tracks.

And yes, it features full Japanese voice acting with lip sync, available from the very beginning.

October 2nd Is the Day of Reckoning

With everything shown—from the fluid weapon transitions to the evolving bounty system and the naturalistic exploration model—Ghost of Yōtei is shaping up to be one of 2025’s most impactful action titles.

Players can expect a deeply emotional, ruthlessly cinematic, and mechanically rich experience when Ghost of Yōtei releases on October 2, 2025.

Whether you choose to ride in silence or carve your legend in blood, the Onryō’s story awaits.

  • My ONLY issue is I don’t like weapons replacing stances. I’d rather stances remain how to fight different enemies, and weapons were purely playstyle elements. Swapping from a spear to a big sword to dual swords and back to a spear is silly! Way less fluid than stance shifting.

    • Agreed. They can keep the weapon swapping but at least give the depth that stances give to combat. Personally, shifting from katana to spear to dual-blade just takes me out of the stealth aspect

    • Eric M******n im looking forward to spear fighting. The GoT stances are cool but its going to throw such an amazing new element to the game for having more weapons.

      • Ryan B***r I don’t disagree on having new weapons. the problem is Spears will -only- be good against one type of enemy weapon. Then we have to swap to a kusarigama to kill another in the same fight. Then an Odachi. then dual swords. Etc.

      • I know it is. I just don’t like how we’re gonna pull a spear out of thin air. swap to dual swords. Go back to spear! Pull out an Odachi. Suddenly be dual swords. Whip out that Kusarigama. The fun would be if we could have a weapon, with different visuals and such, and ALSO stances. So we could use the weapon we like to play. Stick with the weapon we want, but the stances counter enemies.

      • Terry Vanopdorpexcept it’s not idiot, using one weapon and changing fighting styles is far more appropriate then carrying four different weapons, and jus magically swapping between them, pull there shit outta thin air. GOT stances make get ode sense then some walking armory who can make weapons appear and can still be as fluid and not weighed down in combat speed

    • Eric M******n y’all complain bout everything big glasses ass u can only have 2 weapons at a time

    • Eric M******n bro if you want stance switching that bad go play Nioh 3 it’s about to come out soon anyways….and it honestly makes more sense in a realistic scenario most people use their knowledge of swordsmanship abilites in the most realistic way possible nobody is constantly switching stances in a fight to gain advantage over others in real life we use what we learned in combat to the best of our abilities and strategy which makes the weapons make sense

      • Charles W******s you know nothing of sword fighting. Changing stances indeed happens, swapping weapons mid combat by pulling them out of a hammerspace dimensional pocket does not

    • Eric M******n Canonically, it makes more sense though. Jin was grown and disciplined in tradition – his stances were mastered and effective. Atsu, a survivor for all intents and purposes, was grown and disciplined in adaptability and survival. Her stances are still there, but the stances naturally change based on the type of weapon you use. If Jin used other weapons, he would naturally change stance too, but his mastery was with the katana.

      • Dominic M******a you are such a moron, nobody swaps weapons like Bugs Bunny pulling them out of hammer space. You don’t have time to do that in a fight. Stances in real life change fluidly but you don’t change weapons mid fight. Its stupid and immersion breaking

      • Brandon A***s you’re under every comment defending this game lmao. Like you’re taking personal offense to opposing opinions. You’re the problem with the world bro. Calling this guys family inbred because he don’t want to play this dumbass game that you’re worshipping. Fuckin clown

      • Brandon Adamsbig talk coming a man who’s whole identity is sucking some dead YouTubers dick, all that Etika trash on your profile. Your the pathetic one

    • Glenn M***e J***. exactly. It’s not bad that’s the MC is female, it’s WHO they picked to play this character. If they dropped this bitch and found someone more relatable and easier to connect with on a better level there wouldn’t be as much hate

  • Brandon W*******l now that is the stupidest comment. Literally no one has had issues with female leads in games. That’s just bullshit gaslighting by woke twats. Jin Sekai had more story in him. A lot of people wanted a continuation of his journey. Not a punt and change.

    • Josh V****n not even close. Ghost of tsushima is literally a knock of assassin’s creed. Same assassination mechanic that ac has had for decades.

    • Marcin T*********i first off. Ghost of tsushima copies the same mechanics ac has had for decades. Second. Yotei copies having a female protagonist. And game play. Tsushima may have come out before shadows but ac has been ac for years….

    • Benzy B***s you obviously have not played it, give it a try – also, if you’re talking about stealth mechanics? That’s been around forever

    • Marcin T*********i funny thing is. Ac shadows actually brought ppl back to ubisoft. It’s the best ac since black flag. Shadows alone restored hope in ubisoft

    • Benzy B***s must have read different articles and watched different movies. As for it being the best since black flag – nowhere near, I replayed BF like 3 times. Did all the side quests I could. Literally fell asleep playing Shadows. It’s a HUGE disappointment, in my opinion at least. Ubisoft is a just a huge crop that owned by wall street churning crap out and calling it a “AAA title”.

    • Marcin T*********i everyone is entitled to their opinion and ill respect yours. Even if you don’t agree with me. Bottom line ac and ghost share Hella similarities.

    • Benzy B***s Ooof you needed 2 posts for me? And the spelling police? God it has to suck wanting to be funny so bad and THAT is what you come up with.
I’ll say it again, you’re frighteningly stupid.

    • Benzy B***s SO many games do, as if parkour & sneaking isn’t a thing. What about “Uncharted”? Came out two days after the the very first AC game – what are the gameplay mechanics there? You can’t say that one game stole sneaking and parkour, it’s been around for ages as a game mechanic in many games. Now, as for the setting – AC: Shadows totally saw what a hit GoT was and decided to that Sengoku era Japan would be a money maker. Simple as that.

    • Benzy B***s yeah, so is GoT. AC pales in comparison. Give the game a try, leave your opinion of Ubisoft at the door and you’ll enjoy an immersive game with a pretty good story. Please, open your eyes about what Ubisoft is doing. They lost their passion for gaming a long time ago. It’s all about sales for them.

  • Still scamming games about cosmetics when gameplay and the world is totally cringe and empty simple as f. Go f yourself and those games they waste 100 hours of your life

      • Brandon A***s she isn’t a samurai. She’s some random farmer woman slaying trained samurai as if they were nothing but cannon fodder. It’s another women empowerment game. SuckerPunch’s entire studio changed since 2020. It’s literally a bunch of liberal women making the game.

      • Chris R*****o The crazy thing is I feel like some of you losers really believe that what you’re saying is logical and reasonable. But in no uncertain terms, your involuntarily celibate 4chan ramblings are weird and dumb. I’m implore you to figure this out sooner rather than later. Don’t be embarrassed that you were like this ten years from now when you finally mature into a man. You’re gonna be so mad at The Quartering for leading you astray. Just do better today instead.

Or you know, remain a woman hating loser, IDRFC.

      • Chris R*****o imagine getting called out for being a 4chan edge lord nerd-cel, and responding by unironically using the word “cope”. lol You can’t make this stuff up.

      • Brandon A***s I don’t use 4chan. I have a girl. You’re coping. The irony is you’re the incel brother. I mean, look at you. Crying under every comment that isn’t praising a video game. The fact you’re so unaware of yourself is peak irony.

      • Chris R*****o even among your contemporaries, you’re not that good at this. The fact that you don’t understand what’s happening is expected. It’s strange though, it’s always the most smug of you losers that end up being so condescending. You’re pretending to hate a game that you’re never going to or never were going to play because…women work at the studio? lol If you had any shame you’d feel it. And if anyone believed you could find a partner, she definitely doesn’t know you’re out here doing your best Critical Drinker impression. lol Waste of human life.

      • Brandon A***s you’re so emotional bro lmao. Go get your T checked.
I platinumed GoT & have done 3 100% playthroughs of it.
I was totally looking forward to this game until they announced the MC. Then all the added details of the MC actor being a trans activist. The studio replacing most of the men.
If you enjoy gay, woke slop games. More power to you. I’m not insulting you for it.
You’re everything you claim to hate bro. Just look at you, insults left & right. Acting like you know me personally lmao.
Delusional & hateful. You’re just projecting bud.

      • Chris R*****o man these fuckin simp ass pro pedo gay trans men activitst I swear pathetic. They come to our media and fuck it all up. Got weak men, ugly strong women terrible stories. I’m tired of it. I just got back into gaming. I was locked up for 5 yrs I got freed and everything and everyone is sensitive.

      • George L*******j A*****o I just want one gd game where you play as a masculine man. Just one. Just about every new fighting/war game you’re a random female, whose effortlessly maiming highly trained male warriors. The story is always pushing liberal ideology & has homosexual undertones. SP made a fantastic game with Tsushima, built the loyal fanbase & performed the rug pull of the century as far as gaming goes. It’s unbelievable. Then, when you point this out, you’re mobbed by a bunch of low T weirdos who project their miserable lives unto you. I’ve no problem with female characters, but they always give them a male role. There’s zero creativity involved. The femme fatal trope is played out & the majority of gamers are sick of it. It’s just the very, very loud minority who bash anyone with said opinion. Like Brandon, who’s under every comment taking personal shots at people who are just saying they’re disappointed & didn’t want the franchise to head in the direction they took. They always preach acceptance & being inclusive, but that only applies to those that share their opinions & beliefs. It’s scorched earth on everybody else. These people are the dividing force for our country.

  • Benzy B***s nah man, you’re late. The fake gamer grift is over. We know you’ve never played Ghost of Tsushima or any of the Assassin’s Creed. GTFO

    • Benzy B***s bum really said “hey man, don’t expose me. I was posted up in this comment section being a fake gamer”. lol goofy weirdo. Find a hobby you like if you don’t like video games.

    • Benzy B***s If I looked like you I wouldn’t be happy with my life either. You still don’t have to pretend to be a gamer to hate on anything with a woman in it. I can only imagine how many women cooked you for your appearance. Talkin this greasy about anything with visibly bad genetics is a terrible idea.

    • Benzy B***s *questions intelligence* *Ghost is AC Shadows “knockoff”* *Ghost came first*

Are YOU retarded?? That’s not even remotely logical.

    • Brandon A***s and I said “ghost is ac knock off” not *shadows knock off*. Learn to fucking read before making yourself look retarded next time

  • Wow yall act like Lara Croft doesn’t exist. There have been many female protagonists long before now. The first game was a man. This one is a woman. Are yall that afraid of girls? Are your panties in a bunch?

  • Montgomery L****n nope, that will only backfire on you unfortunately…and ye explain your definition of woke…

      • Because they jumped ahead 300 years denying us more jin
because they replaced him with a a girl boss who will probably turn out to be Gay
some of the creators of this game have zero success or credibility and only care about the message

        Go woke go broke

    • Marty S****e If it was another male MC this would make sense. But if there are aspects of the story that deal with her being woman it going to be weird with a Jin mod.

    • Shawn S********r Yotei wasn’t designed for Activists though. Whoever made this Meme is just ripping on Erika Ishii

  • Benzy B***s brother you realize this is a sequel to a game that came put years before shadows right? How retarded are you buddy?
