The next Assassin’s Creed game has been revealed. Called Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, the game will take place in Victorian era London, and will feature not one but two characters: Jacob and Evie Frye.
First leaked as “Victory” last year, this second current-generation-only title is hard-pressed to deliver what Unity failed to: a playable game at launch date. Now with a very different setting, and new mechanics, Syndicate looks to regain lost credibility by going back to the gameplay experience which is the core of the whole series.
One of the most noticeable changes is the inclusion of a second, female character. You will remember that Ubisoft drew flak last year for the not having female avatars in Unity’s online play. It seems like Ubisoft gave in and put in a female character, possibly marking a departure from the traditional ‘ancestral memories’ angle the whole mythos of the series was built on. There’s nothing really wrong about it: I’d welcome female characters as long as their existence serves a purpose, rather than putting them there just to please proponents of gender equality. But historically speaking, politics and conflict had been dominated by men, and a Lara Croft-like character will look terribly out of place in a video game that uses historical periods in which to set their story.
Anyway, it seems that another new mechanic is gang wars. Probably a modified version of the old Brotherhood system, except this time, the enemies can fight back, and there are all-out brawls. Instead of a sword, you will also be relying more on a dagger and a set of brass-knuckles as well as the trusty hidden-blade to enforce your Creed on a hapless Templar.
The most important thing to remember is that this game has no multiplayer. And you can ride carriages, looking like GTA V set in Victorian London (or more accurately, Watchdogs in Victorian London). It has also tweaked the stealth element – which has been the weakest part of Assassin’s Creed the past few installments – and has brought back the whistle.
I have yet to make the jump to the current generation of consoles, but this title is still cause for excitement. Probably one of the first games I’ll play when I make the jump, provided it’s not the “unplayable without a patch” mess that Unity was.

Please note that the gameplay footage is pre-alpha. The final product might look different. Assassin’s Creed Syndicate will be out for PS4 and Xbox One on October 23. The PC release will be coming later in the fall.
