Gaming has seen a mixed bag of releases over the past couple of years, whilst some have been a huge disappointment and fell far short of the expectations, others have proven to be a worthy surprise and quickly grown to become amongst the most popular recent releases. Lost Ark is a 2.5D theme park MMORPG that replicates the style and success of ARPG games like Diablo and Path of Exile, but adds a much more involved MMORPG spin on them – first released back in 2019 in South Korea and shortly after in Russia, it has been a widely anticipated game in the west ever since but had yet to find a publisher to see it launched – with the involvement of Amazon Game Studios, however, February 8th will mark the launch of early access for this game and the 11th will be the date available to free to play players. It’s expected there will be some substantial changes to remove some of the pay-to-win features that are more prominent in the eastern market, but given it’s the second most popular game in Korean PC bangs and a huge game in the Russian market too, the EU and NA release have a lot to live up to.
The beta release just before Christmas managed to pull in some exciting figures with nearly 100,000 concurrent players on gaming platform Steam showing that there is some growing interest – but there may be some questions around server stability on launch given the recent issues with another title in New World which experienced long log-in queues and other stability issues – whilst this may have been a learning period to be ironed out for the Lost Ark release, it could be quite a crucial part of the launch and getting in wrong could lead to longer term damage too.
With a solid base and an exciting release schedule that has been incredibly successful though, the game could shape up to be one of the best releases in 2022, and given the current instability in the MMORPG market as a whole, could provide a great new gaming experience for refugees or a great holding game for those waiting for another release.
