Update 2024: Disable Home Button from Activating Steam Big Picture
With the Steam Deck bringing in more spotlight to Big Picture Mode, the UI changes that Steam has been rolling out meant that some who may have used this fix before may not work. I can confirm this as I have just setup a new gaming PC and made the mistake of toggling the “Guide button focuses Steam” to on and now even after disabling it, all my gamepad’s Home button are now bringing up Steam Big Picture mode. In this updated revision of this article, I’ll be sharing with you a sure fire way one any gamepad’s to disable Home Button from activating Steam’s Big Picture mode.
100% Verified on All Console Gamepads – Method to Disable Home Button from Activating Steam Big Picture
Tested on a PlayStation 5 DualSense gamepad, a PlayStation 4 DS4 gamepad, an Xbox One gamepad and a Nintendo Switch Pro gamepad. If you’re using a Windows compatible gamepad like the older Logitech F710, you can apply the same solution below in this guide.
Step 1: Navigate to the Steam Settings Menu:
To get started in disabling the Home Button on Steam is to go straight to the settings menu. This works on Steam Desktop or Steam Big Picture.
Step 2: Go to Controller Settings > Test Device Inputs
In Steam Desktop mode, the controller settings are slightly to the bottom of the Settings screen. In Steam Big Picture mode, its a big on the upper-middle of the list. Both will still show the same items which includes allowing us to customize the button layout. This can be accessed via the Begin Test button beside the Test Device Inputs item.
Regardless of the controller you have, only the gamepad image will change. All the menus are the same and in this menu we will completely disable the use of the Home button on all these gamepads to disable the Home button, effectively disabling it globally, both on Steam Desktop or Steam Big Picture. We’ll talk about this more later.
Click Setup Device Inputs and you’d be taken to a controller setup screen. This screen will ask you to follow the promp onscreen to customize your preferred button layout for your gamepad. You can follow the on-screen prompt or customize your but we’re here to disable our gamepad’s Home button and right after the stick setup in this menu, we’ll be given the option to map the gamepad’s Home button.
Step 3. Skip Home Button Mapping
Upon reaching this part of the setup and following the buttong mapping prompts, you will be asked to press a button to map to your Home or Guide button. Press X (Playstation), A (Xbox) or B (Nintendo) to skip mapping this button. Proceed to finish the rest of the buttons.
Once done, you’ve completely disabled the Home or Guide button on your gamepad mapping which disables bringing up Steam Big Picture mode.
As already mentioned, this effectively disable the Home/Guide button in Steam, it will still work globally on any application but in rare cases where an application in Steam may need it, it will be unavailable. For Steam itself, it will also remove immediate access to the overlay menu in Steam Big Picture mode. Other than that, there’s no other consequences in following this route.
And that’s the 2024 updates for this method. After nearly 10 years of enjoying Steam Big Picture-free gaming on my desktop, I’ve encountered this again and I’ve seen folks dealing with this all those times and just living with it.
The original guide to disabling the home button from activating Steam Big Picture is below and still works… for some folks. If you missed it you can still try it. The original text from 2017 is below but with updated photos for Steam’s 2024 user interface:
You want to disable home button on Steam because you’re used to making it pop-up to the home screen on console but doesn’t do the same on PC, right? Me, too. If for whatever reason you’ve been wanting to stop Steam for activating automatically whenever you press the Home button on your gamepad for PC, there’s actually a simple method that’s been implemented recently but its not found in Steam’s main menu but in Big Picture Mode itself.
Disable Home Button – Quick Fix
To disable Steam Big Picture from activating when you press the Home button on your Xbox controller or PS4 DualShock 4 gamepad on your PC, you just need to uncheck a simple setting while in Big Picture mode. To do this start Steam Big Picture mode, click the gear button for settings in the upper right corner and locate the following option:
Inside Controller Settings, toggle “Guide Button Focuses Steam”. If the toggle icon is on the left, that means the option is off.
This will now disable the Home button on your gamepad from activating Big Picture Mode. Now funnily enough, if you’re problem is the reverse where you can’t activate Steam Big Picture mode using your gamepad’s Home button, then you’ll be surprised that reversing the steps above works.
For the input customization screen, just press Steam > Settings > Controller > Test Device Inputs and click Reset Device Inputs on the customization screen. This also means that you need to activate the Guide Button Focuses Steam check box in the settings menu.

It works perfectly for me 🙂
Doesn’t work.
For all you PS4 controller users just turn off PS4 config support and download DS4Windows and rebind the button to anything else in the settings

It worked for me, hope it works for you…
LMAO YOU’RE GOD!
For all you folks that say it don’t work, stop double pressing on your home button to “check” if it works. This guide disables the 1-press home button activation of Steam Big Picture, not double press where there is sadly no way around aside from completely disabling Steam Big Picture by other means or disabling console pad support.
Nice try, but steam just re-checks it and keeps it opening. Plus, once steam gets a hold of that guide button it doesn’t do the function it did previously.
Ok, now I know this new update works.
