With the availability of AMD Ryzen 5 processors and more options for AMD AM4 motherboards, it’s time for a new PC build guide for playing games at 1080p, 60 FPS. Gaming performance without overclocking is the priority in this guide but tweaks to the build are also included to accommodate the varying wants and needs of PC gamers. Tips on choosing an OS (operating system) are also included for those building their 1st gaming PC.

The Components
Just some REMINDERS:
- The prices are based on the item listing of retailers in Metro Manila. Price may change without prior notice so call the store to verify the updated price on your day of purchase.
- For the monitor, we recommend the ASUS VC239H as starting point since it’s a 1080p 60-Hz monitor with an IPS panel and can be had for under PhP 10,000. If you want a better gaming experience, LG 29UM58 and BenQ ZOWIE XL2411 are great options and can be had for under PhP 15,000.

Gaming Performance
We already tested NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB before and proved to be a good balance between price and performance for playing games at 1080p. The benchmarks below were done using maximum image quality settings. If you plan to play at 2560 x 1080 resolution (ultrawide) or use a 1080p 144-Hz monitor, you can tweak the image quality settings to get higher frame rates.
OS for First-time Builders
Windows is actually a great OS for gaming and we consider it as our primary choice. However, PhP 7,299 is a huge amount of money for some and may still be an issue at this budget range. As illustrated below, using Ubuntu MATE allows the use of better components.

Linux gaming has improved a lot since Valve released Steam on Linux last February 14, 2013. More AAA games are coming to Linux every year and it made switching to Linux for gaming more viable.
Tweaking the Build
For those with slightly less budget and those willing to spend more, here are our recommended tweaks for the PhP 45,000 build.
Conclusion
Whether you use Windows or Linux, we can guarantee that you’ll have a great gaming experience with the build. Getting consistent 60 FPS on the latest games running at 1080p is possible if you tweak the image quality settings. Another great thing with our build is you do not have to worry about CPU bottleneck when you upgrade to more powerful GPU’s such as the GeForce GTX 1080.
The video below shows an Intel quad-core CPU with Hyper Threading disabled getting maxed out in the CPU-intensive area of The Witcher 3. Faster GPU’s such as the GTX 1060 and the GTX 1070 will exhibit the same scenario and expect upcoming games to be more demanding on the CPU. Other YouTube videos verify our findings.
Intel Kaby Lake is faster than AMD Ryzen in some games but people forget to consider the game engines. Most of the games today are using game engines designed prior to the time of AMD Ryzen. Those game engines were optimized to take advantage of the design of Intel CPU’s since Intel was the market leader. Some games such as Rise of the Tomb Raider are already getting patched for AMD Ryzen performance optimizations and we expect future games will be released already optimized for AMD Ryzen.
