AMD has just confirmed the upcoming HEDT CPU to counter Intel’s upcoming X299 platform and its respective CPUs including the new Core i9 CPUs with their AMD Ryzen Threadripper CPUs. AMD’s Jim Anderson confirmed the initial reports regarding the high-end, high-performance part aimed for enthusiasts and extreme multi-tasking with its 16 cores and 32 threads. The Threadripper will be available summer 2017 which puts it on the same window as the Intel Sky Lake X and Kaby Lake X release. AMD could aim to coincide it near the launch of the Core i9 7920X which is set for an August release.
The AMD RYZEN Threadripper, rumored to be the Ryzen 9 series processor is reported to have 12-core, 14-core and 16-core parts in its family. The CPU will have 44-lane PCI-e gen3 root complexes, quad-channel DDR4 memory support along with other features common on HEDTs. The Threadripper is expected to arrive in LGA package consisting of 4094 pins.
The LGA4094 socket will be a scaled-up version of the SP3 socket that AMD has been using on their Opteron-compatible multi-socket enterprise platforms. The consumer variant is expected to feature a more user-friendly retention mechanism, dropping the need for a screwdriver to secure the processor.
More information is expected to be released leading to the time of release. No mention of frequencies and other details have been given.
