Call it a devolution of the series or a milestone to the progenitor of the survival horror genre, but no one can argue that the Resident Evil franchise has been one of the most anticipated games during its time. While it did somehow lose its focus in striking fear to the hearts of gamers and had it replaced with adrenaline-pumped super soldiers that take down hordes of zombies, you can still find a Resident Evil title in most of the gamers’ libraries.
If you guys remember, Capcom left us Resident Evil 6 back in 2012, and from then onwards, the main series has been left since. It’s been three years already, and it looks like a Resident Evil 7 is under way.
“We’re currently not at a state to talk about it,” said Resident Evil Producer Masachika Kawata when asked about Resident Evil 7 in the 600th issue of Dengeki Playstation (via Siliconera) “…but please stay tuned.” he continued.
As the franchise has been losing its horror touch, the producer answered with a hopeful but indirect response – “Since there’s been more spinoff titles, I can see how it can be perceived in such a way. And of course I believe that we should produce titles that bring out the horror. I’m thinking about it and also preparing for it.”
This could mark as a return to what Resident Evil has been all about since the beginning. Although they did try it with the previous installment, specifically in Leon Kennedy’s scenario, it somehow wasn’t enough to be considered as a return to the franchise’s roots. In my perspective, Leon’s scenario was eclipsed by the other characters that it played like Resistance for the PlayStation 3 and PSP.
Nevertheless, Capcom’s remake for the first titles have proved to generate much hype. The remaster of the remake of the original Resident Evil managed to sell more than 1 million copies, and Resident Evil 0 is set for next year to capitalize on the first one’s success. The Resident Evil 2 remake is also happening, with fans being the driving force towards Capcom’s approval.
Do you still have faith in Capcom and the next installment of Resident Evil, or have you already disowned RE 5 onwards and other spinoffs while you kept your fingers crossed for a remake? Do share your thoughts.
