A Ghost of Tsushima movie is reportedly in the works. One of 2020’s best games is getting a film adaptation! Ghost of Tsushima, one of the best samurai games ever (read read our review of Ghost of Tsuhima for the PS4) is going to the big screen.
Nate Fox, Game Director from Sucker Punch Studios writes in a blog that “The idea of translating our game into a new medium is exciting, and we’re intrigued by the possibilities.” He added further that we would all be able to relive the tense transformation of Jin Sakai from a whole new vantage point.
Sucker Punch is partnering with (who else?) Sony Pictures with John Wick director Chad Stahelski at the helm to head the Ghost of Tsushima movie realization. Given how wonderful the action scenes in the John Wick movies are, I’m fairly confident that he’ll give Jin Sakai justice.
Ghost of Tsushima was a smashing critical and commercial success. Not only did it sell more than 6.5 million copies since release, it was hailed as one of the best titles ever to be released on the PlayStation 4. This is in turn led to huge love from the fans which would spin off, of course, to other projects like a Ghost of Tsushima movie. Not only that, the real Japanese island of Tsushima has appointed both Nate Fox and Jason Connel as permanent tourism ambassadors for the island. Even a Nagasaki Prefecture Tourism site had a Ghost of Tsushima page, as well as a tour route of the locales featured in the game. The game was also very popular in Japan.
Film adaptations of video games are not always successful but there are certainly good efforts. Ghost of Tsushima itself is greatly inspired by Akira Kurosawa’s samurai films. With the Ghost of Tsushima movie coming, this has now come full circle.
