Ryan Hurst, announced back in February as Kratos for Prime Video’s live-action God of War series, is being recast after suffering an on-set injury. According to Deadline, Hurst tore his bicep while performing a stunt in June and required surgery, and the show’s studios, Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, have now made the decision to move forward with a new lead.

Recasting decision: Deadline reports that full recovery from a torn bicep can take up to a year, longer than the production’s shooting schedule could accommodate. As a result, the four episodes already completed with Hurst will be reshot with his replacement.

What Happened

TMZ first reported last month that Hurst had sustained the injury on set, at the time noting that production had been halted with no confirmed resumption date, and that some sources worried filming could be delayed as late as 2027. Deadline’s more recent report narrows that timeline: preparation is expected to begin in August, with full production resuming in October.

No Replacement Named Yet

As of this report, no new actor has been announced for the role of Kratos. We previously covered Hurst’s casting, which drew attention in part because Hurst had voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök and had reportedly put on 40 lbs of muscle to prepare for the physically demanding live-action role.

God of War Live Action Series

The God of War series adapts the story of the 2018 Norse reboot, following Kratos and Atreus as they journey to scatter the ashes of Faye, Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother. Along the way, Kratos works to teach his son how to be a better god, while Atreus teaches his father how to be a better human. Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner, with Cory Barlog also involved in the adaptation.
