If you have ever built a budget PC or revived an aging laptop, there is a very high chance you’ve handled a Kingston A400. In a testament to the enduring lifespan of the SATA interface, Kingston has officially announced a major storage milestone: the company has shipped over 100 million units of the Kingston A400 SATA solid-state drive globally.

Launched in 2017, the Kingston A400 quickly became a favorite for entry-level storage. It boasts read speeds of up to 500 MB/s and write speeds of 450 MB/s, offering a massive leap in system responsiveness, boot times, and data transfer rates compared to traditional mechanical hard drives.

The Drive That Revived Millions of PCs

While the modern PC hardware landscape is currently obsessed with lightning-fast PCIe Gen 5 NVMe drives, the humble SATA SSD still commands a massive footprint. For almost a decade, the A400 series has been the preferred, cost-effective choice for consumers looking to upgrade conventional hard drives without breaking the bank.

“Kingston remains committed to delivering products that combine performance, quality, and reliability,” said Keith Schimmenti, SSD Business Manager at Kingston. “The widespread adoption and positive reception of the A400 SATA SSD demonstrate Kingston’s ability to meet the evolving storage needs of a broad range of users.”

Looking Ahead

Despite celebrating this monumental milestone for SATA storage, Kingston is keeping its eyes firmly on the future. Schimmenti noted that building on the success of the A400, the company continues to accelerate its innovation across high-performance NVMe solutions, enterprise-grade data center SSDs, and industrial SSDs tailored for mission-critical applications and edge environments.
