With Kyrie Irving being traded to the Celtics in a highlight deal for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic and the Nets’ unprotected 2018 first-round pick as reported by Jeff Goodman of ESPN, this has just made the cover art for the upcoming NBA 2K18 game release invalid with Kyrie Irving sporting a Cavs jersey on the cover.

With only a month to go before release, 2K may already be too far into production to perform any changes to their cover and in-game footage may already have been created that may also require some changes. 2K could possibly have contingency plans for these kinds of situations but given the small window before release that they have, they’re very much pressed for time.
A similar situation can be recalled on EA’s Madden 2009 with then Green Bay Packers Brett Favre was traded to the New York Jets. EA released the game with a Packer-jersey wearing Favre but released a downloadable cover for fans to print with an updated Jets jersey on Favre.
This once again sparks the conspiracy about players leaving upon appearing in 2K covers:
NBA 2K14 (2013): LeBron James leaves the Heat and goes back to the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014.
NBA 2K15 (2014): Kevin Durant leaves the Thunder and goes to the Warriors in 2016.
NBA 2K17 (2016): Paul George leaves the Pacers and goes to the Thunder in 2017.
NBA 2K18 (2017): Kyrie Irving is reportedly being traded to the Celtics before the game even releases.
Of course those in the years not listed have remained in their respective teams by then.
