The Ghost of Sparta has a new face, and it comes from within the franchise itself. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television have officially cast Ryan Hurst as Kratos in Prime Video’s live-action adaptation of God of War.
For fans, it’s a full-circle moment that blends familiarity with reinvention.
Why this casting matters
- Hurst previously voiced Thor in God of War Ragnarök, earning praise for raw intensity
- He brings physical presence and emotional restraint from roles like Sons of Anarchy and The Walking Dead
- The series adapts the 2018 Norse reboot, shifting focus to Kratos and Atreus’ fractured father-son bond
- Showrunner Ronald D. Moore leads the project, signaling a character-driven approach
- Production is already underway in Vancouver with a two-season order confirmed
With Cory Barlog involved and a creative team pulled from prestige television, the Prime Video series is positioning itself as a serious adaptation with production already on-going for a 2-season outing.

Surely Chris Judge who voices Kratos is already the perfect candidate?
David B******d sure… paint a obviously black man white
Kratos isn’t naturally white though is he? He is covered in ashes. He was actually quite dark before hand being Greek.

I can see the look, but I can’t hear the voice or acting.
Meng V***g I said the same thing about Henry Cavill as Geralt but he absolutely nailed it.
I’m okay with this.
