The EA panel during last week’s Star Wars Celebration Orlando revealed the new trailer for Star Wars Battlefront II. The sequel to 2015’s imppressive but content-starved Battlefront, the new game will feature not only player classes, but a single player campaign whose story is confirmed to be part of the official Star Wars canon.
The story predominantly follows Iden Versio, former leader of the Imperial Special Forces Inferno Squadron. Versio and her squad were present during the Battle of Endor, fighting rebel forces in the forest moon itself when the Death Star II exploded. Seeking to avenge her fallen Emperor and the confused and shattered Empire he left, the story will span 30 years and will include the founding of The First Order and the eventual destruction of Starkiller Base.
Hero characters will also be in the game, with Versio interacting with Luke Skywalker at one point in the trailer. This might be one of the first official post-Return of the Jedi appearances for Luke who has been noticeably absent in most media covering the period between Episode VI and Episode VII. While other heroes will be in the game (most notably the multiplayer and some single-player modes), it isn’t clear if their controls will be made to fit their respective abilities. One of my biggest complaints with the first Battlefront game was the counter-intuitiveness of the controls for Jedi characters, notably Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker.
Battlefront II’s multiplayer will also feature maps and characters from prequel, original, and sequel trilogies. The trailer showed Darth Maul going against Yoda, some snippets and stills of battle droids and clone troopers, and Kylo Ren being Kylo Ren.
Space battles will also return, something I am really looking forward to after experiencing the overly simplistic but very entertaining space battles in the first game. EA also announced that there will be no Season Pass for this game. A step in the right direction? I don’t know, but I have a feeling there will be a catch.
Expect the usual related material like books, toys, and other stuff to hype up the game. Star Wars Battlefront II will have a worldwide release on November 17, 2017, a month before Episode VIII comes out. Let’s see if EA finally fulfills Battlefront’s potential.
