Tencent Holdings, China’s internet giant, is set to acquire Clash of Clans developer Supercell for an astounding $8.6 billion as reported by Wall Street Journal.
As many may known, Clash of Clans is one of the most popular mobile games on the planet right now securing a sizable audience and is one of the most played game ever spawning numerous clones and partnerships. Even if its not your cup of tea for mobile games its left a significant mark on history having one of the most aggressive marketing push in recent history for mobile games. This has attracted many people to adopt the game including those who may have other liking for games like mobile bingo which has been a very popular game for a significant audience also.
Tencent Holdings holds many investments across China including League of Legends and they are set to fully acquire the majority stake for Supercell from Japanese telco SoftBank. The acquisition will be done in stages with complete acquisition happening around Q32016 that is there is no regulatory issues over the purchase.
With Tencent having full control of the Chinese League of Legends industry and now with Supercell in their portfolio, the company is dubbed as being the world’s leading company in the computer games industry as said by WSJ. Together with the acquisition, Tencent will also get all the games from Supercell including Clash of Clans, Clash Royale and Boom Beach all of which have very high ranking in their respective platform app stores.
