Pierre-Loup Griffais of Valve recently announced, through the Steam Community Discussions, that Valve is still supporting Linux and have not abandoned the development of SteamOS. Their announcement is probably in response to the stir that was caused by GamingOnLinux‘s article about Valve silently removing the Steam Machine section in the Steam website. As expected, some of the online publications who are biased against Linux gaming immediately made articles to reiterate as to how Valve failed on the Steam Machine. The public announcement from Valve is a smart move because it effectively kills any speculation that Valve might also be silently abandoning Linux gaming.
Here are the highlights of Pierre-Loup’s post.
- Valve is still working hard on making Linux a great place for gaming.
- Valve is continuing to invest significant resources in supporting Vulkan.
- Valve also have other Linux initiatives that they still cannot talk about publicly.
So, there you have it. Linux gaming is not dying and it is not being abandoned by Valve.
In addition, Feral Interactive already confirmed that Rise of the Tomb Raider and Life is Strange: Before the Storm are coming to Linux this Spring 2018.

That’s great news. I’ve tried a bit of Linux gaming recently and to my surprise it’s working quite fine. There are still a few bugs to fix. Like, if I enable the Steam in-game FPS counter my game glitches like hell. But, still, it’s quite a pleasant experience. And I’m also quite surprised to see that Bethesda hasn’t released Skyrim for Linux yet. Like, they did so for almost every other platform except Linux.
