Valve Co-founder Gabe Newell suggested during the Game for Change Conference the possibility of it’s latest title, Portal 2 as a means for educators to express the beauties and wonders of Physics to students. This is the challenge Valve is setting it’s sights on as they plan to work with educators in unlocking the “education” potential of Portal 2.
Valve, in cooperation with educators plans to teach students about creativity and physics via the game’s various puzzles and Hammer level-editing tools.
It is quite gratifying to see that developers of big named titles are taking steps in finally reaching out to the educational sector. With video games being tagged by parents, educators and those in authority as the “biggest reason why students neglect” their studies (which is true in a lot of cases) it’s refreshing to see that a company like Valve has stepped up to make games more than just a “fun past-time”.
This news actually made me recall this Extra Credits video I once viewed, I seriously hope educators would take notice since this actually works (based on personal experience).
