In 2023, Winamp decided to change its model to a streaming service with the final version of Winamp remaining frozen in time as a free download. I actually wrote a tribute article for Winamp last year, check it out. Anyway, on May 2024, Winamp is announcing that the company will be publishing the source code for the Winamp music player for Windows on September 24, 2024.

The company states that this is to open up collaborative development on the player, possibly to evolve the product further and perhaps see another resurgence while the company focuses on its upcoming mobile player for other platforms.
