Introduction

BIWIN might not be a household name for the average gamer just, but if you’ve been around the industry or at least dug into the components of your favorite pre-builts and laptops, you’ve likely crossed paths with their storage or memory solutions. Primarily known as a licensee maker and an OEM heavy-hitter, BIWIN has been steadily pushing into the consumer/enthusiast space with their “Black Opal” series.

Today, we have the BIWIN Black Opal DW100 DDR5 RGB memory kit on the test bench. While the company recently turned heads with their ultra-premium “OC Lab” Gold Edition kits, the standard DW100 we are looking at aims to be the bread-and-butter for high-performance builds, balancing cost, aesthetics, and that sweet, sweet SK Hynix performance.

With the Ryzen 9000 series now firmly in the market, the demand for stable, high-speed DDR5-6000 to DDR5-6400 kits is higher than ever. We’ve strapped this kit onto our Ryzen 9 9950X test bench to see if it can complement our top-end processor. Does the Black Opal shine, or is it just another stone in the pile? Read on to find out more.

Closer Look

BIWIN ships the Black Opal DW100 in a full-colored box with the products inside a clamshell plastic enclosure. The front hero image of the DW100 shows both white and black color options of these sticks to probably limit packaging print costs. Details are printed on separate sticker labels. Please check if the speed and capacity are correct.

The BIWIN Black Opal DW100 takes a slightly different approach than the ultra-stylized “OC Lab” version you might have seen floating around social media. The standard DW100 utilizes a heavy-duty aluminum alloy heatspreader that feels surprisingly substantial in the hand. The finish is a satin texture typical of flat aesthetics that still want to exude a premium feel by touch.

Design-wise, BIWIN calls this their “three-fin” cooling design. You can see the ridges stamped into the metal, which increases the surface area for thermal dissipation. It’s a functional industrial look that doesn’t scream “gamer” too loudly until you turn the lights on. The branding is fairly minimal, with the Black Opal logo printed cleanly on the side.

One thing to note is the height. At roughly 50mm, these are not low-profile sticks. If you are running a massive dual-tower air cooler like a Noctua D15 or the newer DeepCool Assassin Elite VC, you will want to double-check your fan clearance. For AIO users, however, the height just means more visibility for the RGB.

Speaking of RGB, the diffuser on top is unbroken and offers decent uniformity. It’s compatible with all major motherboard ecosystems (Aura Sync, Mystic Light, etc.), and in our testing with the ASRock Polychrome software, the LEDs responded snappily with good color transition. It’s bright enough to be a centerpiece but the diffusion material does a good job of preventing “hotspots” where you can see the individual LEDs.

Conclusion

The BIWIN Black Opal DW100 DDR5 RGB are a solid piece of kit. For a brand that usually hides behind other labels, the Black Opal DW100 is a loud and clear statement. Underneath that heatspreader is the engine of a performance kit. With 10-layer PCBs and SK Hynix ICs (A-die for our sample), BIWIN isn’t cutting corners where it counts.

On our Ryzen 9 9950X test bench, the EXPO profile for DDR5-6000 was plug-and-play instant stability. This is the “sweet spot” for AM5, and the Black Opal DW100 sat there happily through our entire stress test suite. Bandwidth numbers were right where they should be for this frequency, and latency was snappy.

For the overclockers in the room: yes, there is headroom here. While I normally use a ROG Crosshair X870 Hero for the AM5 platform tests, I figured given the position of BIWIN in the market, a more affordable board would make more sense. And while performance out of the box is great, tweaking is a bit more of a challenge on this board.

Dropping to C28 was as easy as copying the C28 SKUs timings but tweaking further showed that our sample was already on the brink of what the chips can do. Playing with the memory clocks also yielded the same as even on loose timings, pushing past DDR5-6600 at 1.4v caused instability, while pushing higher clocks just didn’t boot.

Anyway, your mileage will vary (silicon lottery applies), it’s clear that BIWIN is binning these kits well enough to allow for some enthusiast tinkering but there seems to be an upper li. It might not have the extreme hand-tuning of the “OC Lab” edition, but it’s certainly not locked down.

The only real caveat are 2 things. First, the height: 50mm is tall, and SFF builders or air-cooling purists need to measure first. But for the standard mid-tower AIO builds, the height just adds to the visual appeal. And second, and most notably, the price. Due to the Q4 2025 RAM volatility situation, while BIWIN can still compete as one of the more affordable RAM options when available, they are doing this at what is approximately twice their original list price.

This is further exacerbated by regional disparity. Pricing for the BIWIN Black Opal DW100 varies by region and capacity, but they generally position themselves competitively against TeamGroup. Locally, you’ll find the more common DDR5-6000 C36 32GB kits which are front runners for the general price: performance balance.

Ultimately, if you are looking for a memory kit that combines a robust industrial build, reliable performance, and a clean aesthetic that works in both “stealth” (lights off) and “showcase” (lights on) builds, the BIWIN Black Opal DW100 is a serious contender.

It marks a successful transition for BIWIN into the high-performance consumer space.

BIWIN backs the Black Opal DW100 with a limited lifetime warranty. I give it my B2G Recommended Seal!
