Introduction
With the AMD Ryzen 9000 X3D series launch already behind us and all the AM5 motherboard partners out in full force, what we’re seeing now is less of a generational leap and more of a polishing round. The boards coming out of the X870 generation are feeling a lot like a refresh cycle, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing—especially for brands like COLORFUL who are steadily refining their lineup offering.
That said, today we have COLORFUL who has recently added the CVN X870 ARK FROZEN V14: a motherboard that clearly isn’t trying to fight on brand prestige but instead carve out its niche as a stylistic, semi-premium platform with modern features and a very defined visual identity.
We’ll walk through the layout, design, and features of the CVN X870 ARK FROZEN V14 and see what it brings to the AM5 ecosystem in this review. Read on!

Packaging and Presentation
COLORFUL’s packaging game is consistent with their past CVN ARK FROZEN series—white-heavy boxes with metallic tones and large branding.
While this may not appeal to stealth build enthusiasts, it certainly pops on shelves. The product comes with the typical accessory suite: four SATA cables, a Wi-Fi antenna, some M.2 screws (surprisingly still standard instead of tool-less latches), a user manual, and a driver USB stick. No gimmicks, no swag, no fluff.
Motherboard Layout and Build
Unlike its more muted CVN series siblings, the FROZEN branding here is not just cosmetic albeit also confusing. While it does denote a white board, the COLORFUL CVN X870 ARK FROZEN v14 is more of a warship inspired series, and has mostly had steel grey, light grey as their main color scheme. Hence, there wasn’t a need to have FROZEN in the name,
The board comes dressed in a metallic silver PCB, white shielding, and chrome accents across the VRM and M.2 heatsinks. Visually, the CVN X870 ARK FROZEN V14 is a showpiece board aimed at white or silver-themed builds.
The board retains the standard ATX form factor and opts for a relatively traditional layout. Unlike other vendors pushing edge-to-edge shrouds or diagonal cuts, COLORFUL plays it safe but tidy, with well-placed headers, ports, and reinforced slots where it matters.
Power Delivery and Cooling
The board touts a 14+2+1 phase VRM setup powered via dual 8-pin EPS connectors. This is more than adequate for all Ryzen 9000 and even Ryzen 7000 CPUs, including the power-hungry AMD flagships 7950X/9950X and their X3D counterparts if you’re planning on pushing clocks under PBO or CO tuning. The VRMs are cooled by dense aluminum fin stacks that extend into the I/O cover—arguably the best-looking cooling solution COLORFUL has put on a board to date. I am curious what warship they saw that had steel grey on the hull but yellow markings to inspire this color scheme.
The MOSFETs are serviced by large heatsinks which feature grooved machining for better thermal mass, and while there are no heatpipes bridging the blocks, the sheer mass is enough to dissipate load from extended high-power scenarios.
Memory Support
The CVN X870 ARK FROZEN V14 supports DDR5 memory up to 192GB (48GB x4) as of the latest BIOS patch, with overclocking support claimed up to 8200+MT/s depending on your CPU’s IMC and memory quality. It also supports AMD EXPO and traditional manual tuning. The DIMM slots are reinforced and feature single-sided latching.
Expansion and Slot Configuration
The board features:
1 x PCIe 5.0 x16 (reinforced)
1 x PCIe 4.0 x4
1 x PCIe 3.0 x1
The top slot is wired directly to the CPU and features a metal shroud for GPU reinforcement. There’s also a mechanical release button under the GPU slot that COLORFUL dubs the “CVN Pullout Switch.” This solves the finger-pinching problem of thick GPUs in cramped cases—a neat QoL touch.
Storage support includes:
- 2 x PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots (CPU lanes)
- 1 x PCIe 4.0 M.2 slot (chipset)
- 4 x SATA III ports
Each M.2 slot is covered by its own aluminum heatsink with a unique checker-patterned finish, presumably for surface area gain, and possibly to match the FROZEN branding. These heatsinks are not oversized, which gives better compatibility with thicker GPUs and AIO tubing. However, tool-less retention is absent—these are still screw-secured.
Rear I/O and Connectivity
The rear I/O cover is one of the highlights here. It’s a sharp, integrated design with the usual aggressive CVN branding. The rear panel features:
- 1 x USB4 (40Gbps, Type-C) – also supports DisplayPort Alt Mode
- 1 x HDMI 2.0
- 1 x DisplayPort 1.2
- 6 x USB 3.2 Gen2 (10Gbps) Type-A
- 1 x 2.5GbE (Realtek)
- 1 x 5GbE (Realtek RTL8126-CG)
- Audio stack with optical S/PDIF
- BIOS Flashback and Reset button
- Wi-Fi 7 antenna connectors (MediaTek MT7925)
COLORFUL is playing it smart here, balancing high-end USB with good networking. The addition of both 2.5GbE and 5GbE onboard is rare, especially in a non-flagship board but X870’s main attrraction is USB4 which is present here.
Internal Header Layout
The board’s internal headers are where COLORFUL keeps it practical:
- Front USB-C header (likely 20Gbps, possibly 60W PD but not advertised)
- USB 3.2 Gen1 and Gen2 headers
- 6x fan headers
- ARGB + RGB headers
- Front panel audio header in standard ALC1220 configuration
- Boot sequence debug LED and power/reset combo buttons
No postcode LED is visible on the board—an unfortunate omission. There’s also no dedicated water cooling pump header, so you’ll have to adjust PWM curves if using one.
Thoughts and Conclusion
The COLORFUL CVN X870 ARK FROZEN V14 isn’t a flagship motherboard. But it doesn’t pretend to be. Instead, it hits a sweet spot for builders who want the look and most of the features of premium AM5 motherboards without touching the $600+ tier.
COLORFUL’s clean layout and smart feature allocation mean it’s not just style over substance. It avoids fluff like 10GbE, Thunderbolt certification, and bloated bundled software while delivering on essentials: Gen5 storage, USB4, Wi-Fi 7, and sturdy power delivery. For white builds or anyone trying to get away from the usual black-and-red theme, it’s an easy aesthetic win.
There’s nothing extreme here—but that’s arguably the strength. As long as COLORFUL keeps pricing competitive, this could be a dark horse contender in the X870 race, especially for people who want function-first builds with a little flair.
