Yamagami, Hasebe and Miyoshi are new employees of the city’s health and welfare department. And they’re all entering their new careers with their own peculiar backgrounds. And this is pretty much the premise of this show.
The humor is largely based on their random interactions at work. Some are with regard to their dealings with clients, some with regard to their own office quirks.
And yes, this is pretty much unremarkable stuff. It’s pretty realistic, with their issues of constantly being scolded by citizens, over-demanding clients and the general hate people have to their government city workers. Admit it. At some point in your lives you disliked one or two of them.
But this is pretty much why this series is likened to Working! Both deal with a rather boring scenario of being employees in the office. However both, I believe, manage to become entertaining by leveraging quirky characters and throwing them into fun and amusing interactions.
Take for example, Hasebe who is an excellent worker but is mostly a slacker who simply won’t take things seriously.
Or Yamagami, a seemingly enthusiastic employee who is really just a person with a grudge over whichever government employee allowed her parents to name her with more than five first names. And you think three is already a lot…
So what can I say? This is comedy done well. Segments are short and crisp, being that it is based on a 4-koma manga, but it never really settles for just slapstick humor. I would even dare say that this is actually better than Working!, on the account that this is more balanced with regard to finding humor in the actual work as well as in the interaction between employees. Working! largely just focused on the latter.
