Introduction
USB4 enclosures are the current ceiling for external NVMe storage without going to a full Thunderbolt 5 host and devices supporting that are few and far between. For the USB4 niche though, the Unitek SolidForce Reefer TurboCool (S1242AGY) is Unitek’s fan-cooled entry in that category. It is rated for 40Gbps over USB4 with read and write speeds up to 3,800MB/s, accepts M.2 PCIe NVMe drives in 2242, 2260 and 2280 sizes up to 8TB, and adds an internal fan that activates automatically once the enclosure passes 45°C. Unitek pairs the fan with a silicone thermal pad and a ventilated aluminum shell.
The use case is straightforward: a spare Gen3 or Gen4 NVMe drive becomes portable scratch storage for video work, a game library for a handheld or laptop, or a fast clone target, at speeds that a 10Gbps or 20Gbps enclosure cannot reach. The fan is the differentiator against passive USB4 enclosures, which throttle under sustained writes when the drive heats up. This review checks whether it holds speed under load and what the fan costs in noise.

Features and Specifications
The enclosure is USB4 at 40Gbps and backward compatible with USB 3.2, 3.1, 3.0 and 2.0 hosts. On a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port it drops to 10Gbps and on Gen 2×2 to 20Gbps, so the 3,800MB/s figure only applies on USB4 hosts. The drive interface is PCIe NVMe only; SATA M.2 drives are not supported.

Closer Look: Packaging and Bundle
Unitek ships the enclosure in a retail box with the speed rating and fan inclusion mentioned on the front and the compatibility list on the back. Inside are the enclosure, the short USB-C cable rated for 40Gbps, the thermal pad, heatspreader aluminum sheet, and the mounting hardware for shorter drives.
Closer Look: The Enclosure
The shell is aluminum in Unitek’s Space Grey finish, with ventilation slots cut into the housing to give the fan somewhere to move air. The USB-C port sits on one end. A LED indicator is positioned near the USB port and shows drive activity and status.
Opening it up exposes the M.2 slot with mounting points for 2242, 2260 and 2280 drives. The thermal pad goes between the drive and the shell, and the fan sits on the rear side.
Test Setup and Methodology
We test external storage on our standard bench. The enclosure is connected to a USB4 40Gbps port for the primary results, with a second pass on a USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps port to show what the enclosure does on an older host.
- Test drive: Kingston NV3 2TB
- Host system: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X on a GIGABYTE X870E AORUS MASTER X3D with 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL26
- Ports tested: USB4 40Gbps; USB 3.2 Gen 2 10Gbps
- Thermal run: sustained sequential write
Benchmarks: CrystalDiskMark
CrystalDiskMark gives the headline sequential figures against Unitek’s 3,800MB/s claim, and the 4K random figures that determine how the drive feels when loading a game library or scrubbing footage.
| Test | Read (MB/s) | Write (MB/s) |
|---|---|---|
| Sequential 1M Q8T1 | 3363.08 | 3268.40 |
| Sequential 1M Q1T1 | 2774.94 | 2610.30 |
| Random 4K Q1T1 | 52.30 | 81.65 |
3DMark Storage Trace Test
| Test | Bandwidth (MB/s) | Average access time (µs) |
|---|---|---|
| Average | 233.30 | 133 |
| Load Battlefield V | 651.39 | 115 |
| Load Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 | 532.91 | 126 |
| Load Overwatch | 254.92 | 94 |

| Install game | 161.93 | 84 |
| Save game | 30.01 | 255 |

Conclusion
Many modern laptops nowadays support USB4 along with some higher-end desktop motherboards. For the most part, if you’re a mobile professional or a power user and want the fastest storage you can get, an actually SSD is your best choice but most external SSDs are capped by USB3.2 10Gbps so maximizing USB4 brings out the potential of any mainstream Gen3 SSD, at least. For those who may have a spare SSD from when they upgraded or and have it laying around or really need the portable speed, then this is a great solution.
The SolidForce Reefer TurboCool does what a USB4 enclosure should on a 40Gbps host: delivering its ratings and utilizing the speed that our SSD can give. In this case (pun intended), its also kept cool. The thermal image above shows the loaded SSD doing a full drive write at 30% (roughly 600GB written, past saturation) completion, and it is chilling in our 28*C room with the internal fan barely doing work. Older drives with more NAND, or warmer controllers, will need the active fan and will see far greater numbers. Our sample will throttle at full Gen4 speed after writing around 200GB/s in most cases, but it sees milder temps in this chassis due to the limited peak transfers and the Unitek SolidForce enclosure is taming the drive enough to sustain peak write throughput.
The fan is doing its job and is fairly silent; add the thermal pad and they’re an easy reason to pick it over a passive USB4 shell. Backward compatibility means it still works on any USB-C port, but the speed advantage only shows on USB4 hosts, so buyers on USB 3.2 Gen 2 laptops will see the same 1,000MB/s ceiling as a much cheaper enclosure.
At USD $92.99 it sits at a competitive market and a very niche one at that. Still, for the most part, the Unitek SolidForce Reefer TurboCool enclosure is above passive USB4 enclosures and well above 20Gbps units.
The Unitek SolidForce Reefer TurboCool is available from Unitek directly and is backed by a 2-year warranty. I give it my B2G Recommended Seal.
