Top Competitive Online Multiplayer Games of 2020 So Far

The world is going into chaos and as much as I’d like to veer away from the situation, the fact is that it is reality and a lot of people are forced to stay at home. With this situation, lifestyles have definitely changed but one thing is for sure and that its both a blessing and a curse for gamers in the world. Barring that and staying on the more happier note of what we’re going through, games have provided a nice distraction to the world’s problem right now and this is something we heavily need to reinforce social activity despite the social distancing we’re mostly doing. On the casual side, people are enjoying games on a larger scale but it is on the competitive side that we a massive spike in recent times.

In this article, we’ll run down the year’s current, top competitive online games. This list is of varied genres and in no particular order, focusing on the total gaming hemisphere and we’ll run through some of the classics as well as some that may surprise you. Let’s begin.

DOTA 2 has remained a top MOBA for a lot of players and thanks to its mix of deep gameplay dynamics and varying meta, it provides a more competitive experience versus its longtime rival, League of Legends. DOTA 2’s current simultaneous players still rank as the highest in Steam, only to be contested by CSGO. More on this later.

DOTA 2’s highly competitive playerbase puts it in a distinct position amongst MOBAs as the de facto title which is why this is a highly recommended game for those that want to experience a deeper MOBA. DOTA 2 is a part of our GPU review benchmarking process due to its position in the MOBA scene.

Mobile Legends Bang Bang

Hate on it as much as you want but between League of Legends and Mobile Legends, there’s a lot more love for ML going on right now. Starting off as one of the titles, during the mobile MOBA advent, Mobile Legends has managed to pull away against rivals Arena of Valor and Vainglory, cementing its position as one of the most heavily played mobile games right now in SEA. While the western world finds these games alien, Asia has embraced mobile MOBA and Mobile Legends is an easily accessible and easy to grasp, introductory title worth checking out. Its established ranking serves as a deeper challenge especially for organized groups to put their skills to the test.

Rainbow Six: Siege

If you told me Rainbow Six Siege would be one of the most played online FPS in the world 5 years after launch, I would laugh at you. As a day one player, Rainbow Six Siege lacked the depth and meta play that its current incarnation has. But the developers persevered and its Game-as-a-Service model has really paid off, beating similar hero-based FPS like Overwatch in one of the top FPS of 2020.

R6: Siege has a consistent playerbase in both Steam, Uplay and consoles and has slowly raised its status to the point that we now have a defined esports scene for Rainbow Six Siege.

Its highly tactical gameplay coupled with pulse-pounding action make it a highly thrilling FPS but demands not only skill but tactics and analysis. The kind of game that takes clutch play to a whole new level.

Call of Duty: Warzone

If there’s a title that holds a global grip on the competitive scene right now, its Call of Duty: Modern Warfare but that’s taken to a whole new level with the introduction of their free-to-play component, Warzone. Formed around the battle royale format, COD Warzone puts up to 150 players from all platforms in head to head combat. With the more restrictive play style of Battle Royale or Warzone’s Plunder game mode, players skills are tested and with an eventual ladder potentially in the horizon, this newly released title is certainly holding up to the hype.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO)

CSGO has been around for a longtime and compared to FPS titles like Siege or Modern Warfare, is definitely technologically behind. Still, the fundamentals of FPS games is the core of CSGO and no game has remained rooted in that that CSGO. The game’s popularity has been put in question in past years but with Steam recording 1 million concurrent players playing CSGO recently, it has never been more popular than it is now.

CSGO is as classic as any other title in this list. Its Valve brother DOTA 2 has evolved over time, graphically and meta-wise, but CSGO has remained the same despite improvements over the years, and all of that for better. Valve has improved the ranking in the game and has made it a more endearing competitive experience.
