Conclusion
So going back to a raw CPU performance perspective, the Core i7 8700K core advantage does lend itself nicely to applications that can utilize its increased core count and this does have its benefits for those that are on older systems.
As this is our initial look into the processor, its easy to say its a good product due to the advantage it has over the competition and its predescessor on a performance-only perspective but from a value-proposition angle, the benefits become less attractive. With a launch price of $359 (Philippine street prices expected to be around Php23k), the Core i7 8700K competes with the AMD Ryzen 7 1700X at $399. As of this writing, US prices for the AMD Ryzen 7 processors are currently going as low as $399 for the Ryzen 7 1800X which is the top-end variant normally priced at $500. On a core-count basis, the Ryzen 5 1600X is the closest competition for the i7-8700K which at $250, is significantly cheaper.
As it stands, its still inconclusive for us how the i7-8700K stacks up. As it is, its a decent processor and good example of just how powerful Intel can make their processors if they wanted to but strategic business decisions do affect how they create their products and for now, we’re left scratching our head what the Z390 coming this Q2 2018 may offer.
If you’re asking if this is a good processor for work tasks then yes it is. If you don’t want to jump on the HEDT platform and feel a mainstream desktop is more for you, the Intel Core i7-8700K is just right if you work mostly with 4K videos and/or multimedia editing. For gaming and streaming, we’ll cover those in another article.
We’d like to hold on to our final conclusion until we’ve completed our series. For now we are still very much reserved about the Intel Core i7-8700K and the rest of the Coffee Lake family save for the new quad-core Core i3 models. With the Z390 chipset already set in stone and a potential 8-core in the horizon, there’s no certainty how good an upgrade the Intel 8th-gen is.
If you’re from an older system (Sandy Bridge or Bulldozer) and use your system main for work and could use the core count increase and you don’t feel the need for an HEDT platform then the Intel Core i7-8700K is probably the processor you’ve been waiting for.
