The Maxwell architecture is NVIDIA’s greatest achievement as of late given its efficiency compared to the last generation. While it doesn’t serve as a great leap in terms of performance, many people are still convinced by the excellent performance-per-watt ratio. Both the GTX 980 and GTX 970 have been largely in-demand primarily for the efficiency but the Maxwell-based GTX GPUs also introduced some new features including NVIDIA Voxel Global Illumination (VXGI), Multi-Frame sampled AA (MFAA), and Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR). Maxwell GPUs also support Microsoft’s upcoming DirectX 12 API.

About GeForce GTX 960

The GTX 960 is, to be very concise, a GTX 980 split in half as the table below indicates. Whatever made the GTX 980 a great card has been cut in half, castrated and reduced to make the GTX 960. That means its still the same 28nm Maxwell GPU featuring the same number of transistors but bears the GM206 name whereas the GTX980 and GTX970 bear the GM204 GPU.
Model GeForce GTX 980 GeForce GTX 970 GeForce GTX 960
GPU GM204 GM204 GM206
CUDA cores 2048 1664 1024
Texture Units 128 104 64
ROP 64 64 32
Memory Bus 256-bit 256-bit 128-bit
Memory Size 4 GB GDDR5 4 GB GDDR5 2 GB GDDR5
Memory Bandwidth 224 GB/s 224 GB/s 112 GB/s
As indicated, the GTX 960 will feature 1024 CUDA cores running with a reference base clock of 1126Mhz and a Boost clock of 1178Mhz. At launch, only a 2GB GTX 960 is available and no word on any other memory capacity model yet. The memory runs at a reference 1753Mhz wired to a 128-bit bus. That last part may sound a bit underwhelming but thanks to delta color compression which enables the GM206 to better utilize its available memory bandwidth (148.8GB/sec effective in GTX 960 vs 144.2GB/sec in GTX 660).

The GTX 960 is aimed squarely at 1080p gamers and the launch price places the GTX 960 at the sweet spot at which most mainstream gamers currently sit with a SRP of $199. AIB partners and their custom boards are expected to hover just below $230 but still, this is lower than the GTX 760’s launch price of $250.

Features

GTX960_Press_Final-page-006

The new Maxwell graphics cards introduces some new features to NVIDIA cards as mentioned earlier with the main highlights being VXGI and DSR amongst other things.
features3

VXGI or Voxel Global Illumination improves 3D scenes by introducing more realistic lighting to 3D scenes by introducing voxels or volume pixels which makes light interaction of 3D objects have a more dynamic and photo-realistic feel.features4

DSR or Dynamic Super Resolution is another new featured, integrated via the GeForce Experience application, which add downsampling capabilities to the GTX 900 series graphics cards which lets users of other monitor sizes experience larger resolutions in their monitors without needing say a 4K UltraHD screen or a 1440p monitor. Dynamic Super Resolution works by rendering in the desired resolution and then downscaling the image and applying a filter to the native monitor resolution for an improved image quality of the scene being rendered.

features8

In contrast to DSR, NVIDIA also introduces MFAA or Multi-Frame Sampled Anti-Aliasing. This AA technique basically is a faster implementation of MSAA which should see 4xMSAA quality at the performance hit of only 2xMSAA. Implementation is in its early stages but is promising nonetheless. MFAA can be set via the GeForce Experience app.

GTX960_Press_Final-page-007

As expected given the earlier announcements, DirectX12 is in the works and the new GTX 900 series graphics cards fully support the DX12 API alongside its many new feature offerings including better CPU utilization and overhead reduction, improved multi-core utilization and efficiency, and plenty more features for developers to use.

All of these features complement the already existing feature set that NVIDIA offers including GeForce Experience and ShadowPlay, etc.

Overclocking

Overclocking any graphics card is pretty straightforward nowadays provided you know what to do and given that most companies also have their own overclocking software, makes it so much more approachable. We use the latest MSI Afterburner software for this test.

gpuz

gpuz_OC

One of the main promises of the Maxwell GPUs is greater overclocking. As the stock clocks already demonstrate, we have pretty high frequencies in stock already and we’re able to flex that around more using an overclocking tool like MSI Afterburner. All of our units are retail samples off the shelves and aren’t cherry picked so our OC’s should be more comparable to what’s achievable in most cases.

Quite possibly the highest OC we’ve gotten from any GTX 960 we’ve got, the ZOTAC GTX 960 AMP! Edition has so much headroom to wiggle around in. We’re getting higher OC than our ASUS Strix GTX960 and GALAX GTX 960 EXOC, on base frequencies but the we would’ve wanted to see past 8000Mhz on that memory range. Still a good solid on this GPU and shows us that ZOTAC’s got some good chips under those AMP! edition cards.

NVIDIA’s Maxwell GPUs are the pinnacle of efficiency when it comes to existing GPUs in the market right now and the 2nd-gen Maxwells baked into the GTX900 series are certainly the most impressive we’ve seen to date. The GTX 960 continues the great trend in power efficiency, bringing with it better temps and power draw.

GPU_Load

Despite the beefy looking cooler, we’re a bit disappointed about the cooling potential of this new Zotac cooler. While it does manage to keep the card on a nice idle temperature even with the fans sitting idle, it is under load that we feel that cooler is just underperforming as the card soars past 83*C on full load. You can manually tweak the fan to 80% fan speed and one of their main point of interest is that they are absolutely quiet even at 80% fan speed which is just great but still, we want our fans to last a bit longer so a manual temperature curve should be in order if you want better cooling performance under load.

CONCLUSION

ZOTAC GTX 960 AMP EDITION Review
ZOTAC GTX 960 AMP! EDITION Review

The ZOTAC GTX 960 AMP! Edition is one of the rare instances that game artwork is used on the card itself and it is a well-executed in this one also with the Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes artwork really giving the card that stand-out visual pop. Let’s break down the card further:

Performance. NVIDIA tags the GTX 960 for a sweet spot position namely the 1080p market with its [email protected] campaign. We try and fit our benchmarks to the most active games that set a benchmark for today so Battlefield 4 and DOTA2 are up in there with performance definitely well in the playable range. BF4 does hover below 60FPS with in-game settings set to Ultra with 4xMSAA enabled. A few touches down AA should improve performance overall though.

Build Quality.  With the new cooler design really looking intricate we’d have expected some better cooling but the thinner fin stacks are just enough to keep the card just above 80*C. While the card can do still raise its fan speed to compensate, we’d have wanted a semi-passive temps of below 79*C to give GPU Boost more room to push the card further. Still, the ZOTAC GTX 960 AMP! Edition is one of the most

Functionality. The GTX 960 is a good mid-range card with power draw perfect for an everyday gaming PC and also an HTPC. That said, the ZOTAC GTX 960 AMP! Edition is a pretty good choice given its middling size and will some ITX chassis with ease. The low power draw also makes it a good pair for low-capacity, high-efficiency power supplies.

Bundle.  Its starting to get really tiring writing off a lot of graphics card we’ve reviewed recently and shooting some points off because they don’t come with a free game. If you’re buying right now, NVIDIA is heavily promoting Witcher 3 and any qualified 9-series card purchased recently (during time of writing) are entitled to a free copy of Witcher 3. That said, the ZOTAC GTX 960 AMP! EDITION MGS:GZ variant features a free copy of Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes. That’s a wicked offer to pass up and should spice up

Value. At $210, the ZOTAC GTX 960 AMP! EDITION is competes with many of the higher-end GTX 960s out there but its MGS GZ bundle and backplate makes it an easier pick compared to the other GTX 960s we’ve looked at. If the game isn’t what you’re looking for though, the look of the card is easily a good option if you’re looking for something modest yet stands-out in a certain way. The Metal Gear Solid artwork could be worth it more for fans of the game. As an added incentive, ZOTAC offers an extended warranty period of 3 years for a total of 5 years total warranty coverage. You can read up on the specific warranty duration for more regions in ZOTAC’s warranty info page.

The GTX 960 promises good 1080p gaming and while we didn’t see consistent numbers even in NVIDIA-optimize titles like Batman: Arkham Origins, pumping up the screen to 1440p still sees lower drops vs. those we see in AMD cards in these titles so a few tweaks with GeForce Experience or the in-game details could get the card really flowing in the the [email protected] range for many titles.

The power draw is really where its at and if you are really mostly gaming in the 1080p resolution or heavily focused on MOBAs with a touch of AAA games here and then, the GTX 960 is surely a top choice for you.

  6. Looks good with the metallic finish on the shroud and the backplate of course. Other brands (MSI) should start adding backplates on their cards. It adds appeal and protection.

  7. This is a great mid-high end GPU. It consumes lesser power compared to high-end GPUs but it offers a decent gaming experience even in modern games. If paired with a decent CPU, this GPU would be enough in about 3-5 years of gaming depending on how you use it.

  8. This video card is a quiet one that run with lower power, running on the new Maxwell gpu. One of thiose cards is the ZOTAC GeForce GTX 960 AMP! Edition. and also i like this card because its factory overclocked and it can do 1080p gaming while staying in a cool and quiet state, and i love its boost clock at 1329mhz. money deserves this card… absolutely great for a mid range system.

Edition by Zotac offers a neat back plate and one of the awesome games, the Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes.

  16. Slick performance and power efficiency. Full armored look of the card at any angle and the addition of a back plate for more assurance of the cards stability. Legit brand and runs quiet even on game and still have low temps.. Small size of the card, can provide more air flow for smaller chassis. one bang for the buck GPU! wish to win this badboy so much ! 😀

  17. I love how low the TDP are, super compact size and very powerful. It has a good looks to that will compliment to my current set up. 🙂 I love how zotac do their cards. 🙂

  23. I want this card because it has slick design and the performance is definitely for its price range. Thanks for nice review B2G. 🙂

  24. ZOTAC GTX 960 AMP! Edition is the best card for me. One reason is that it has a metal shroud which help the card in cooling system. It also has a low power usage and load temperature. In addition, it comes with an easy use 1 click overclocking software “firestorm” which work best for me. And the most Important thing for me is the performance ratio because it is very affordable compare to any other brands with the same performance in the market! So thanks for the chance ZOTAC Philippines and Back2Gaming! I want to win a GTX 960 AMP! EDITION! 🙂

  31. Very nice and affordable card. Plus there’s always something sexy about a card with a backplate. lol And oh, I hope to win this one. It’d be nice to have an upgrade.

  32. I would really want this card. I want to win the give away! I really want a good gpu. I have been using my gt630 for about 3 years now! Cant even play a decent nex gen game !

  33. I hope i’ll win this gpu since i’ve just started building my gaming PC, still don’t have the budget for the card, and I really want an nvidia card since most of the games developed right now are supported by nvidia *not hatin on amd* so yeah, the extra features than nvidia card have is one of the reasons that i should own it on muh new pc. Plus it has lower power consumption! Hurray for electric bill!

  34. I like how Zotac GTX960 AMP!-edition is pre-overclocked which gives you a bit more performance and also is very silent making it a perfect gaming card for the user who doesn’t want a hair-dryer in their system.

  35. It makes me wanted to have this to complete my custom custom built computer I still need a to buy a motherboard and graphics card if I win I can save more money to get a good motherboard I want to have this since I made my research on YouTube from newegg that it has great performance. Thanks for the chance ZOTAC Philippines and Back2Gaming! I want to win a GTX 960 AMP! EDITION!

    #want2win

  36. What makes this card, the Zotac GTX 960 Amp! Edition, so great in terms of performance, is that it’s already factory overclocked. So you are already on the safe side of its operation when gaming. Another point for the power efficiency is it’s Maxwell Architecture. One more plus is on it’s great performance-per-value price. Though, my only downside for it is on it’s total available VRAM, it only has 2GBs of it. If it had a 4GB version, that would be perfect!

  37. This zotac GTX 960 amp edition! is kinda dream for me because im a student who don’t have enough money to afford this type of card, by the way this card would greatly be one of the best from each aspect and to those rivals of this card either red or green based from your review ( nice review sir). in my case im using 1080p monitor which this card is perfectly suited because those upcoming games and the currently high end games (gta v, witcher 3, etc.) would benefit and can be expected to run ultra settings in 1080p by this card aside from that it could run for 1440p in decent performance. About temperature and power consumption for a beast gaming card the temperature is kinda low compared to other brands in my opinion. in power consumption it only deals 173w at high load(what a nice power consumption) it pretty could run on my corsair vs650. being a student with a lot of stress playing games could benefit a stress reliever with a proper time management and gtx 960 would fill all about my expectation on most lovable games that i want. if i given a chance to have this card i will take care of it on its top form and be responsible gamer too. i would rate your review as 9/10 for being so simple but knowledgeable review more power BOSSMAC and thanks for this opportunity! and thats it no other b*llsh*t just saying what on my mind hehe!

  38. Nothing says good gaming than an Nvidia graphics card. Factoring price and performance of the product, GeForce GTX 960 is a must-buy for the gaming enthusiasts out there.

  39. good review, informative and comprehensive! very excited about how much this card can be overclocked!

  40. I can say that this is a Excellent Graphics card For this generation it can run almost all games on max settings without breaking a sweat and it has a Good Cooling solution! BTW you have a Great and very detailed review for the GTX 960 :). Looking forward to the Giveaway thank you and God Bless.

  41. ZOTAC is one of those reputable brands that’s known to market nVIDIA cards here in the Philippines. I’d be glad to finally own one of their cards. And plus, it’s also DX12 ready!

  42. Given the card’s conservative power specification, the GeForce GTX 960 AMP! Edition uses a single six-pin PCIe connector. Zotac’s maximum consumption is rated for 120W, which matches Nvidia’s reference. That’s interesting if only because this board is running at a higher clock rate, suggesting Nvidia’s spec had some headroom built in or Zotac has some hand-picked GPUs.

  43. The Zotac 960 AMP! Edition features a backplate that would look awesome on my rig! Compared to other GTX 960’s, Zotac has not only thought of affordability, but also performance, making this futureproof! I’d like to get one of these!!

  44. ganda ng aesthetics for a mid-range card (and reasonably priced too) haha sana mamaintain ang sweet spot sa 1080p in future titles 😀

  45. Just bought this one yesterday, and met several buyers who have the same reason…to make Witcher 3 playable on their PCs. It was a wonderful experience to share our experiences with playing Witcher 3. And I thought MG Solid was free :-D. This video card gave me more bang for my hard-earned bucks, and it didn’t bleed my ATM card dry.

    Highly recommended!

  46. I recommend this to all of my friends and one of them purchased it. Didn’t expect something and she loved it and I received a big smile and appreciation she never have a smooth and good experience when she played dota 2 . She was so happy with it when she replaced her old graphics card.

Thanks ZOTAC you never failed empressing the girls with your performance with the.

    Best entry level graphics card.

  47. The more I research about this model from zotac the more I want it. The price is fairly done with its features and if you based the performance and how it renders the graphics specially in gaming you couldn’t ask for more you may assume that this is an expensive graphics card for an entry level in fact its not that expensive compared to other brands. The best graphics card I would recommend an A+++

  48. Loving the sweet spot of price and performance with the GTX 960, also with the power efficient Maxwell architecture, NVidia Sure is leading the way in GPU technology.

  49. What i like about the gfx card is that its noise production, though the problem of recent cards are the noise which comes from the coil whines this card maintain the low level of noise which will neither disturb nor annoys the user when at full load.

  50. “Thanks for the chance @ZOTAC Philippines and @Back2Gaming! I want to win a GTX 960 AMP! EDITION!”

Thanks for the chance zotac and back2gaming. I like the overall design, warranty and the way it performs. zotac lover here. Thanks 🙂

  51. i love nvidia clean and green and love its performance 😀
This one is a big giveaway!
Thanks for the chance @ZOTAC Philippines and @Back2Gaming! I want to win a GTX 960 AMP! EDITION!

  52. its a great card i really need to i can play smooth games specially CS:GO im in competetive scene but having but card can be a struggle in game specially in big maps 🙁

  53. Great BANG! for the buck! a very affordable mid-range gaming card with great performance, sexy looks, it has back plate and can fit to a micro-mid tower case.. i love this card, hoping to have one soon, as I only use integrated (built-in) Graphics from my intel cpu….

  54. While the R9 280x has a bit more omph – I absolutely adore the efficiency and lower power requirements this card brings to the table (gotta keep those electric bills low!). This card would be perfect with my few months old intel i5 4590 (still using the integrated grahpics grr)

  55. Good review on a really good graphics card but aside from the specs you really had me at the Metal Gear art on the card itself. Great job! 😀

  56. Zotac 960 AMP! Edition Has that really nice ExoArmor backplate which not only looks stylish, but also gives this card extra protection. Really efficient and the FREEZE technology really helps alot in lowering the noise when i’m not gaming.

  57. In the Philippines we always agree with budget friendly and durable and great performance . The CPU may be the brain of your PC, but when it comes to gaming, the graphics card is the beating heart that pumps pixels out of your obelisk of a tower and into your monitor. Some say why not buy an expensive graphics card and then they recommended other brands luckily I found ZOTAC GTX960 on Facebook and you have to do is sign up and follow the instructions and you could win this for free. So I decided to go with the it which is my target brand I made my research and compare its functions and features to other brands and found out its an entry level graphics card which is for an expert level graphics card ZOTAC GTX960 one can still give you a taste of the best experience in gaming. On top of that A graphics card consists of dedicated video memory and a graphics processing unit that handles all sorts of calculations, like mapping textures and rendering millions of polygons and its best for point and shoot game like METAL GEAR SOLID AND WITCHER 3. I am a fan of the point and shoot game but don’t have a budget to buy one the only game I have played is dota 2. What amazing it is when you keep on studying for it you learn that the ZOTAC gtx 960 has this good behavior to save energy when you play a heavy game the fan starts to process the technology that was applied to it. it circulate the air to cool it self and the aluminum alloy to reduce the heat is an additional cooling technology. Comparison to other brands you can save a lot of money since there is a little difference to other brands you can invest other computer parts such as mother board or ram.

    Conclusion:
    Inexpensive
    Budget friendly
    Excellent gaming performance
    Overclock
    Fast
    Long lasting

    Good things to know :
    Good feedback
    Trusted company
    Powerful hardware
    Cooling technology
    Entry level card
    Smart technology
    Durability wise

BossMac nice review by the way

  59. I’m still starting up my custom build computer and I’m having difficulty to fully complete it since entry level hardware is very expensive.

  61. The looks of the Zotac 960 are quite catching, great game bundle that surely makes it the better choice along with the fine performance it churned out at benchmarks.. This card is surely worth your every penny…

  62. So I decided to buy a Maxwell cpu

Here’s my own review about the ZOTAC amp GTX960

ONE KEY FEATURES of the ZOTAC GTX960

    1. NVIDIA Voxel Global Illumination (VXGI)
    2. Multi-Frame sampled AA (MFAA),
    3. Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR).
    4. Maxwell GPUs also support Microsoft’s upcoming DirectX 12 API.

Since its a Maxwell-based GTX GPUs it has new features and one of them is NVIDIA Voxel Global Illumination (VXGI),
    What is VXGI?
VXGI or Voxel Global Illumination improves 3D scenes by using a realistic lighting to make 3D scenes effective it introduced voxels or volume pixels which makes light interaction of 3D objects have a more dynamic contrast and photo-realistic experience.

Moving forward to the highlights of its features the Dynamic Super Resolution.
This feature makes an excellent viewing experience since it makes all monitor different sizes experience larger resolutions without needing a 4K UltraHD screen or a 1440p monitor. The Dynamic Super Resolution works by rendering in the desired resolution and then downscaling the image and applying a filter to the native monitor resolution for an improved image quality of the scene being rendered for an excellent viewing experience.

Now to the third support feature it doesn’t mean if you have good resolution means you’ll have a good time playing video games specially with high resolution games the MFAA or Multi-Frame Sampled Anti-Aliasing helps you view a smoother viewing experience.
    What is Anti-Aliasing?
Anti-Aliasing is a technology that removes a staircase or jaggy effect when you play a video game in real time making them appear smoother. Since resolution is made of millions of pixels it creates a jaggy or stair case effect what anti aliasing does it creates fake resolution to avoid the staircase effects specially to moving texts or moving objects.

Last but not the least is DirectX 12 API. I’m not to familiar with this feature and have no time to research but if I’m not mistaken this feature is for future advancement of newer resolution.

If Your a gamer a graphics designer or into photography and photo editing the ZOTAC gtx960 amp is highly recommended yo bring life into your game.

    Cheers!

  63. Things to know about ZOTAC GTX 960 amp edition.

The GTX 960 series AMP edition hard ware specification has a dual-fan cooling system to prolonged the card with its factory overclocked speeds on top of that it has two times power efficiency. Plated with metal gear solid design to highlight the boring plain design most 960 doesnt have any back plate but this time they armored the card for battle for every day used.

Hope to win and get this card..thanks ZOTAC and back2 gaming.

  64. The ZOTAC GTX 960 is built for those who would like to over clock and for those people who don’t do over clock. Over clocking motherboard and overclocking graphics card is a perfect match.

Thank you back2gaming and ZOTAC and BOSSMAC for making this possible.

  65. This card, in my opinion, is the best price:performance ratio on the market as of this day. You can game on 1080p with most AAA title games with it easily. That’s what I like the best about this card. Oh, and that awesome-sauce back plate as well!

Thanks for back2gaming for giving us folks the chance to obtain this card!

  66. That back-plate is pretty slick looking and the fans add to the aesthetics, as far as the performance, this thing is a beast.

  67. wow is nice videocard is great performance i want to win this i want to play high end games like nba 2k15, dota 2 high settings, grand theft auto V and more….

  68. What I love about the 960 AMP is that it could be my very first dedicated GPU. The only gaming experiences that I’ve had were on my old laptop’s GeForce G102M and my PC’s integrated HD 4400. So, it’s either this or just buy one of those old and cheap GT 730s. Love the curves on this version of the 960 btw. Thanks for this chance Zotac & Back2gaming.

  69. The review by BOSSMAC on ZOTAC GTX 960 AMP! EDITION 2GB graphics card are the best review you ever seen specially the high light its primary features and hardware specifications.

When you look at the negative sides and positive sides this you’ll see it is worth of an investment all though the bundle game is not an issue since it is sold with an affordable price better having two games than no games and the primary point here is that the gpu and not the free bundles.

This card have been tested in the factory to extremely whether conditions and been stress out to extremely heat so in regards to cooling condition the fan of the card and cooling system is good to last long. User and marketing people just exaggerated things so that you will buy more expensive cards.

Check the list below this review is coming from BossMac.

    POSITIVES
    Solid performance
    Quiet operation
    Backplate included
    Passive mode
    Nice idle power draw
    Single 6-pin PCI-e power only
    Price

    NEGATIVES
    Excellent game bundle right now
    Cooling could be better

I hope I win pang birthday gift lang sa akin this june3.

  70. What I like the best besides the performance is the thermal output of it and the power consumption. I like that AMD is powerful and everything but I really don’t like how much power their cards want and the heat it gives. This card can manage high performance at a lower heat and with less power @ a great cost for people with a tight budget….talk about amazing!

  71. The best thing about this graphics card is that it can play the Witcher 3. We all know that The Witcher 3 is a pretty big game. If this graphics card can play this game. No need to question this graphics card. 10/10 for me

  72. Just saw this and wanted to share. I really want to win this para pang birthday gift lang sa akin.

The ZOTAC GeForce GTX 960 AMP! Edition focuses on performance, function, and style. The new FREEZE technology disables the dual 90mm IceStorm cooler when idle to lower noise and extend the life of the fans while the metal gunmetal ExoArmor front shroud and wraparound backplate, help to minimize vibrations and enhance durability

  73. Best value and it is a high-performance graphics card designed with gamers in mind. Powered by the next-generation NVIDIA Maxwell architecture ,the card delivers incredible performance, unmatched power efficiency, and cutting-edge features.

    1. Depends on your primary concern:

      Performance: R9 380
      Efficiency/Longevity: GTX 960

To be specific, the GTX 960 from ZOTAC is offered with extended warranty up to 5 years, that’s a heck of long time. Performance margin between the R9 380 and GTX 960 is relatively small and will ultimately depend on what games you play. If you’re mostly on AAA games that are NVIDIA optimized, GTX 960 which is pretty much every game out right now.

  74. I currently have the 4gb variant of this graphics card and I must say your review just gave me confidence in my cards ability. 🙂
