AMD unveiled FreeSync to counter NVIDIA’s G-Sync technology and many took it as a sign of improved screen fidelity for the budget masses. Sadly that didn’t go as many have expected and most of the FreeSync monitors that arrived in the market were squarely targeted in the upper spectrum of the market and this left a lot of room in the lower, entry-level segment that was ultimately left unfilled. Viewsonic felt it can capitalize in the space and while it didn’t heavily drum it up during their launch it was certainly a good find particularly the pricing of this monitor sits at around $170 making it one of the more affordable monitor with variable refresh rate and Freesync-capable at the 24″ range.

Closer Look

The box for the Viewsonic VX2457-mhd isn’t as inviting as anyone who has seen more modern gaming monitors but Viewsonic prides itself in value and as part of those cost-reduction methods, the packaging is a semi-colored cardboard box with marketing highlights in one side and multi-lingual specs on the other.

The package inclusions are the monitor base, a VGA cable, an HDMI cable, an AC cord, a pack of manuals and instructions and a little plastic tab.

The monitor itself is protected inside the package with styrofoam inserts and a foam sheet wraps around the monitor itself to prevent scratches. Unfortunately there’s a gaping hole in the screen area and this can easily let uneven pressure of mishandling damage the screen in some instances.

The stand base is wrapped in a plastic film to prevent scratching. Your choice if you want to remove it.

The base reduces mass by going with a grid make up at the base, retaining structural integrity without sacrificing material cost and weight. Rubber feet lessen movement and a thumb screw secures the system to the monitor stand.

The small tab included with the manuals slots in this space in the monitor base and serves as a cable management tool where you can loop in your cables through to keep them in one place.

Here is the ViewSonic VX2457-mhd all setup front facing which is what you’ll be looking at mostly. Its not the slimmest in terms of bezel thickness but as a budget offering that can easily be ignored. The entirety of the monitor is a piano black finish including the base with a clear accent piece in the lower center and a silver ring in the base.

Input supported by this monitor are DisplayPort, HDMI, VGA with line-out and headphone output included.

The ViewSonic VX245-mhd has a built-in power supply so no power-brick is included here. That means though that the bulk of the power brick adds to the internals which gives monitor a noticeable bulge in the back. This is where the VESA mount is found so you can also mount this with a compatible monitor stand or wall mount.

The main panel thickness is just below 1″, again not revolutionary in any way but the taper does make it more slimmer despite the typical office look it has.

The buttons are placed at the back and are marked on front for context. This is oddly unintuitive and feels rather complicated despite being marked onscreen and on the bezel.

Here’s the cable organizer tab attached with the cables going through it. Not the strongest clip but its decent enough to secure 2-3 thick cables without popping off. Very nice touch from Viewsonic here considering the lack of advanced features on this monitor.

Even with its gaming nature, the ViewSonic VX2457 lacks much tilt options and allows only a limited degree of tilt up or down.

As a TN panel monitor, colors aren’t as vibrant in this one as compared to IPS panel but that doesn’t take away a lot from this monitor. Straight-on the colors are decent. You may need to calibrate to suit your tastes as we found the colors a bit washed out by default settings.

User Experience & Conclusion

Certainly the biggest draw here is Freesync and one thing that many should consider is that Freesync is only available to AMD Radeon graphics cards particularly cards from HD7000 series onwards. Still, as a 75hz monitor with 1ms GTG, this is still one of the best monitor for its price range and we’ll get to that in a bit as we discuss Freesync first. One thing to note is that Freesync works via DisplayPort only for this monitor. ViewSonic only includes an HDMI and VGA cable here so you need to get your own DisplayPort cable. That is one of major flaws we see with this product as it is an integral part of the feature. While NVIDIA users may not have much to celebrate here, AMD users will definitely benefit greater with the Freesync feature and with AMD proving to be quite closely competitive with NVIDIA’s mainstream offering.

At 75hz there’s still plenty to like about this monitor especially with its sub-$200 price tag or Php8999 (SRP). With that price it competes heavily with ASUS VC239H which caters more to the screen quality folks with its IPS panel and sleek design. Weighing in our options, an RX 480 for Php13k along with this monitor for Php 9k will be a Php22k investment, which is easily a better deal than chasing 120hz. Although the investment is worth it for that higher league, some may not just be within the budget range of some folks or may not need the 120hz refresh rate altogether. For those that do crave something in the range of 75hz, the ViewSonic VX2457-mhd and its 22″ and 27″ brothers are really good options but at this price and size, this particular model is easily the best of the lot.

  1. Which is the best among this monitors? Which would you recommend?

    Viewsonic VX2452MH
    LG 23MP68VQ
    Asus VC239H
    Acer H236HLbid

      1. I think the comparison boils down to the first 3 you listed with the Viewsonic and LG (the -P model) both featuring Freesync win by that feature alone as well as the 75hz advantage, the VC239H though has the value advantage if you dont need freesync.
