Overclocking
We’re redoing our review format for graphics cards and we’re going to include overclocked performance data in our upcoming reviews. For now we only have two cards to start with but as our database grows, so will our reference data.
Overclocking any graphics card is pretty straightforward nowadays provided you know what to do and given that most companies also have their own overclocking software, makes it so much more approachable. In our case, we prefer the Afterburner software.
To start things off, we try and see how much we can push the card without any voltage tweaking.
Bumping up the clocks without any voltage assistance grants us a game-stable 100mhz bump on the core clock and 250mhz on the memories. Now let’s see how far we can go with a bit of voltage tweaking.
Maxing out our power limit slider, we just couldn’t get past 100mhz more on the core clocks. The memory, which is already very high, managed to get to an incredible 335Mhz more.
We will be using this final stable clocks for our Overclocked card data in the our charts.

Wow. 7970’s performance got hit on torchlight ii.. Disappointing…
It’s already past 100fps so it’s nothing. A lot of MOBA/A-RPG will sit nicely with this card even on max still.
