Well, it doesn’t seem to be significantly related to that, at least based on the info dump given during the first few seconds. Yeah, there was a block of text shown at the beginning that attempts to explain the premise of the show. That kinda sucks actually, since it’s better to show what the series is about rather than just plainly state it.
Anyway, it’s about a mysterious girl who can be considered as an endangered species, one who is recorded in a book called Red Data Book than lists all these mysterious(?) endangered species.
But interestingly enough, the first few minutes is all about people going, “OMG, you cut your hair.” True story. Later on they explain why this is important, since the source of Izumiko’s power (Red Data Girl) is in her hair. On a side note, she cut her hair as a her attempt to change herself. Kids. Pfft.
So what exactly is her power? That is unclear yet at the moment, but at least it’s hinted that a.) It has something to do with computers…
b.) She can magically use the internet to do a psychic communication with her dad…
c.) She can kill, possibly via short circuit, computers.
Given that setting, the plot moves along when random mountain monk Yukimasa shows up on behalf of Izumiko’s dad to sort of take care of her, bringing along Miyuki, a guy of Izumiko’s age, to kind of be Izumiko’s servant.
But oh boy, Miyuki is not happy about it. In fact, he’s your typical brash angry young man with a chip on his shoulder for some unknown reason. He’s got issues yo, issues that manifested way way back when he was a child as he was bullying Izumiko. They were childhood “friends” apparently.
But Yukimasa will have none of it. And beats the hell out of Miyuki to force him to accept the give role of Izumiko’s servant.
Amidst everything though, Izumiko has no freakin’ idea what’s happening. Good job to you.
As far as a first episode is concerned, Red Data Girl managed to pique my interest as to what exactly is this about. Several questions arise: What exactly is Izumiko’s power? What makes her so special? What is this Himegami Miyuki talks about? Why is Miyuki angry? Is he just an ass?
Nothing fancy for now, just raising interest about the premise of the show. And that works.
