A recent article by Xbox360 Magazine features Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli, the man behind Crysis, and his views regarding the timeless question of do better graphics mean better gameplay or not. Cevat Yerli answers:
“People say that graphics don’t matter,†says Yerli, “but play Crysis and tell me they don’t matter. It’s always been about graphics driving gameplay.â€
“In Crysis 3 it’s the grass and the vegetation, the way the physics runs the grass interact and sways them in the wind. You can read when an AI enemy is running towards you just by observing the way the grass blades.
“Graphics, whether it’s lighting or shadows, puts you in a different emotional context and drives the immersion.â€
“And immersion is effectively the number one thing we can use to help you buy into the world.â€
“The better the graphics, the better the physics, the better the sound design, the better the technical assets and production values are – paired with the art direction, making things look spectacular and stylistic is 60 per cent of the game.â€
[/quote]Cevat Yerli has never been one to sugar-coat things and his view on this matter is as expected. The immediate response from people have been mixed but the predominant sentiment of disagreement rings louder than anything else.
So as gamers, we want to know what you guys think? Games have evolved to the point that cinematics and gameplay are now one and the same and with budgets reaching Hollywood-production levels, does this focus on graphics really warrant the attention it is getting or is it just fluff that gets in the way or even hide a formulaic gameplay? Graphics, though an important part of any gaming experience, should not be viewed as the triumphant factor of a successful game. That’s like saying f*ck-you-story-line-we’ve-got-a-great-looking-game. Thus, the reason why I stopped playing Crysis3. It just looks good, and is a great benchmarking tool. Not really a game worth playing for hours, IMO. :))
BTW, product unboxing awards sucks.

GRAAAPHICS…
GRAAAAAAAAAAAAPHICS!
Graphics = Good. It makes sense that it drives players to remember a game but to specifically point out that graphics = more superior than gameplay, I think that’s an understatement. In my opinion, gameplay experience(could be the story, battle system, etc) is more favorable when it comes to players getting hooked on a specific game. Haven’t played C3 though but oh well.
I don’t remember Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Metroid and Minecraft having good graphics to begin with and yet they are still considered as gems.
up-up-down-down-left-right-left-right-B-A-Start to you, sir.
For me, we are on the age of change, just imagine!
the Virtual Reality Gaming is coming to realization..
Intense game play comes from its mechanics..
Games with Lore/ Story makes a deeper side to its core..
But MOBA, RTS and MMORPG don’t really NEED lore/ story..
Why do you think Dragon Nest is a Big Success?
it is because of the physics engine and becoming a revolutionary online game that is MORE to timing than turn based rpgs..
why do you think Kingdom Hearts became a huge success?
It is not about the story concept..
it is about the gameplay mechanics and the variety of spells and combinations you can dish out from the character..
Moba games are a big factor as well in E-Sports Community..
DOTA maps created a new standard from the usual RTS games and created a more competitive community to promote actual teamwork and tactics..
All of the games I have said just run on directX 9 but what if the graphics of those games have an upgrade?
do you see the point?
