Quick Scouting Lets Players Recruit Monsters Without a Fight
In past DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS games, befriending a wild monster meant engaging it in battle and landing a Show of Force before it could be recruited. DQM: The Withered World keeps that tried-and-tested method but adds Quick Scouting alongside it: players who spot a wild monster can throw a hunk of meat at it on the spot and recruit it without entering battle at all. Some monsters have a taste for unusual meats, and the finer the cut offered, the more easily they are persuaded to join. A monster recruited this way is added to the main party or reserves on the spot if there is space, or sent directly to the monster depot if not.
The Scout Run Offers a Shortcut to Rare Monsters
At some point during the adventure, a feature called the Scout Run opens up at the paddock Witherwood. It lets players encounter rare monsters not found out in the wild, and these are recruitable only through Quick Scouting. More monsters appear at the Scout Run as the story progresses. On entering, players receive a quota of Scouty Snacks to throw at the monsters inside the enclosure.

Joint Battles Team Bianca and Nera Up Against Massive Monsters
Joint Battles let protagonists Bianca and Nera combine forces to take down massive monsters that neither can handle alone. Whichever girl the player controls commands the main party while the other controls the reserves, and each party shares HP and MP gauges that apply to every monster in it. Players can still direct the reserve party through the Tactics option. Massive monsters have “Pet Hates,” specific actions that anger them and charge their Rage Gauge; once that gauge fills, the monster unleashes even stronger attacks, but once its anger subsides afterward, it becomes too exhausted to move, giving players a window to finish the fight.
Joint Battles at the battle arena unlock by playing through the story, and players can also take them online. Online Joint Battles let players connect with up to four friends or players around the world to bring down a range of massive monsters together. Winning Joint Battles in the arena or online before the end of round 10 earns prizes. A subscription to the online services of the player’s chosen platform may be required to use certain network features.
New Story Figure Almira Revealed
SQUARE ENIX also introduced Almira, described as “The Watcher of the Archeagles and Witherwood’s guardian,” voiced by Grace Saif. Almira is a priestess devoted to two Archeagles, Michelos and Lucifus, known for her boundless humanity and kindness and adored by all Witherwoodians for her selfless commitment to attending them. Witherwood had long been kept safe under the Archeagles’ protection until Lucifus attacked the people of Witherwood, seemingly without reason. When the Evil Eye descended from the heavens, the Archeagles vanished, and Almira has not been seen or heard from since. Her current whereabouts are unknown.
Three New Monsters Join the Roster
- Hammerhood honcho: A monster of the beast family carrying a massive mallet and a twisted headband, just as ready to fight with its head as with its hammer.
- See slug: A monster of the nature family marked by a single sparkly golden eye, carrying the “Bottom Feeder” Talent, which teaches water-elemental spells and abilities.
- Panda pilgrim: A monster of the beast family clothed in traditional garb, wielding a walking stick sharp enough to make an impression.
