Extraction shooters live and die by their competitive integrity. Recognizing this, Bungie has released a comprehensive breakdown of the networking and security architecture powering Marathon. The studio is implementing a multi-layered defense system to ensure deaths on Tau Ceti IV are the result of skill or mistakes, rather than network manipulation or cheaters.
Authoritative Servers and Fog of War
At the core of this new infrastructure are fully authoritative dedicated servers. The server ultimately dictates all movement, shooting, actions, and inventory. Any invalid client actions (such as teleporting or infinite ammo exploits) are immediately rejected by the server. To combat packet loss and latency, the system utilizes per-shot tracking and aim compensation with a rewind feature. This ensures responsive gunplay for the shooter while preventing victims from being shot when safely behind cover.
Additionally, Bungie is introducing a server-side “Fog of War.” This system strictly limits the map data sent to individual player clients based on what their character can naturally perceive in their immediate surroundings. By withholding global map data, Bungie directly neutralizes the effectiveness of wallhacks, ESP cheats, and unauthorized loot revealers.
Highlight Notes
Beyond the backend architecture, the update highlighted several crucial policies and quality-of-life features that will directly impact the player experience:
- One-Strike Permabans: Bungie is taking a hardline stance. Anyone caught cheating (or developing cheats) will receive a permanent ban from Marathon immediately. There are no second chances, though an appeals process will exist for false positives.
- Mid-Run Reconnects: If your internet drops during a high-stakes extraction, your physical “shell” remains in the world where your crew can protect it. You can restart your connection and load back directly into the match.
- Server Crash Gear Refunds: If Bungie’s own infrastructure fails and disconnects a lobby, the system will attempt to refund the starting gear to all impacted players. This does not apply to personal internet outages.
- Kernel-Level Security: The game utilizes a rebuilt security stack alongside BattlEye, featuring both user-mode and kernel-mode protections.
Editor’s Note: Players can test these new networking systems firsthand very soon. The first slice of the final game will be playable during the Marathon Server Slam event, which officially kicks off on February 26.
