With Team Fortress 2 finally going free to play I decided to help new players out on the various achievements you can acquire in the game. So the first achievement I’d like to present is the scout. The trash talking, double-jumping jack rabbit of the Team Fortress 2 roster. I’d like to say a big thanks to the people at Big Download for providing the guide- though it’s still sad that they’ve officially closed down shop and moved to joystiq.
A Year to Remember
Get 2004 lifetime kills.
This one isn’t too hard to get in normal play. In short, just play the Scout a lot! You will probably get this achievement faster if you play the scout aggressively. If other words, always be at the front of a rush, ready to mow down anybody who gets in your way with your trusty bat, pistol, or shotgun. Not being the flag carrier helps, as it makes enemies focus on you less and gives you more opportunity to kill those chasing the actual flag carrier.
To farm this, have a friend who is willing to be bored out of his mind. Choosing a map with spawn close to each other is good as well. Have your friend constantly run out of the spawn, and constantly kill him. It’s a very tedious farm, and we highly suggest that you just play normally for this one. If you love the Scout, you’ll have no problem getting this achievement the old-fashioned way.
Tip: 2004 was the year that Half-Life 2 came out. Team Fortress 2 is built about the Source engine, which was first showcased in Half-Life 2.
Edit: According to our commentors (and unknown to me) 2004 was also the year that the Boston Red Sox won the World Series! Granted that the Scout is from Boston, this also makes sense!
Artful Dodger
Dodge 1000 damage in a single life using your Bonk! Atomic Punch.
Talk about some dangerous hobbies. This one will probably be a little difficult to pull off in regular play, but incredibly satisfying. Whenever you are performing a particularly dangerous run into enemy territory, simply drink that Bonk! and keep on truckin’. Be wary of the slowdown at the end of your speed and dodge boost, however.
Farming this will be easier or harder, depending on how you do it. In short, you are going to drink your delicious Bonk!, run from a safe zone to another safe zone through a field of massive enemy fire, wait off the cooldown, and repeat. Alternatively, get a friend playing as an enemy Heavy or Medic to blast at you while you are under the effects.
Tip: As this requires Bonk!, this has to be done after 20 other achievements.
Batter Up
Perform 1000 double jumps.
There’s no point in farming this. Just play a Scout. If you play a typical Scout, you will be double-jumping all over the place to avoid shots, get to better places, or set yourself up for some sweet kills. While 1000 is quite a lot, you can probably do it in no time at all if you simply use double-jump as normal.
Tip: This is more of a gameplay tip, but remember that you can double jump in a direction opposite of the one you are currently traveling in. This allows for some sweet dodge moves.
Batting the Doctor
Kill a Medic that is ready to deploy an ÜberCharge.
Interestingly enough, this does not require you to use the bat to get the kill. You simply have to kill the Medic. The easiest way to do this is to watch for a Medic with sparks around his gun. If you see a Medic like that, you should be focusing your fire on him anyways. Killing him before he deploys will net you this achievement really easily and put you one step closer to the new weapons.
To farm this achievement, get two buddies to heal each other until one of them has their über ready. Then kill that person. A fairly easy achievement to unlock by way of farming, especially since it doesn’t even require any special planning! Just a friend willing to build an über and die to you.
Tip: Funnily enough, friendly fire counts for this achievement. I don’t recommend killing teammates with über ready, though. You’re likely to get banned.
Beanball
Stun a scout with their own ball.
This one is a pretty easy achievement to get as well, either by farming or normally. Simply put, knock the Sandman ball right back at the Scout that launched it at you with a melee weapon or air burst. You don’t have to stun them for any specific length of time, but it does have to register the stun. Personally, I love doing it with another bat. There’s just something satisfying about performing the Sandman’s special without actually having the Sandman.
Tip: As mentioned, the air blast works against the ball, as it is a projectile. This can lead to some incredible stuns across the map as a pyro, letting you move in for the murder by fire.
Belittled Beleaguer
Kill an opposing player that has your intelligence while holding theirs.
This one may be a little hard for some Scouts. In short, you will become engaged in a Scout duel. You must be a better Scout combatant than your esteemed adversary, kill him, and come out on top. For Scout duels, no place is better than the roof of the walkway in 2fort. Watch out for an enemy Sniper, though.
To farm this, have any enemy play grab your intel and come to you. They need not be a Scout. The only necessity is that they have your intel. Promptly blow them away and mark off another achievement towards your total achievement count. The best class to kill is obviously an enemy Scout, but as said before, any class will do.
Tip: This is a good achievement to work on with Round Tripper. However, thanks to the “no kill” clause in No Hitter, you quite obviously can’t do that achievement with this one.

Block 50 point captures.
As a Scout, you may find this one a little harder to get. After all, you are not meant to defend points; you are meant to capture points! Regardless, simply step on a point while an enemy is capturing it to count one point towards this achievement. The enemy can either be capturing a neutral or friendly point and you block it to get this achievement. Just make sure that you aren’t the one being blocked.
To farm this, have a friend stand on a point to capture it. As soon as he starts capturing, step on the point to block. Both of you quickly step off after the block triggers, and then repeat until you get the achievement. You might want to have your friend work on this achievement with you at the same time, since you are already aiming to get it.
Tip: It takes a moment for a point to become unblocked and available for capture again, so make sure to give it a second or two after you both leave the point.
Brushback
Stun 50 enemies while they are capturing a point or pushing the cart.
While dangerous (and perhaps going against your inner nature to slaughter all enemies capturing your points), Brushback certainly is fun. Simply stun an enemy on a point or moving the cart forward with your Sandman to get credit for this. Remember that while you can stun an invincible enemy, they don’t count towards capturing a point or moving the cart. So don’t be fooled!
To get this achievement, simply have a friend stand on a point. Stun them and run onto the point, then back off and repeat 49 more times. The reason for this is that the point block will count towards Block the Plate, allowing you to effectively farm both achievements at once. No point in wasting your time, after all.
Tip: Much like several other achievements on this list, Brushback requires you to unlock one of the new weapons. In this case, you must unlock the Sandman, which is 15 achievements.
Caught Napping
Kill 50 enemies from behind with the Force-A-Nature.
It’s not common for a Scout to get kills from behind, but that is precisely what this achievement revolves around. As a Scout, you will want to constantly strafe around an enemy while blasting him. With any luck you will kill him from behind, netting your credit towards this achievement.
To farm this achievement, simply have a friend stand so that their back is facing you. Then blow them away. Simple grind is the name of the game here, and it really is a grind. Do it 50 times altogether, and you have another achievement.
Tip: As is, this achievement obviously requires the Force-A-Nature, so you must have unlocked 20 achievements before you can perform this one.
Closer
Destroy 3 teleporter entrances.
The Scout is at the front of any particular assault. This includes destroying teleporter entrances near the enemy base, which can severely inhibit enemy mobility. Simply run behind enemy lines and blast away the teleporter entrances to get credit. You don’t have to do them all at once either, so if you die, don’t worry.
To farm this, have a friend start to build a teleporter entrance in front of you. Then, before it is finished, destroy it. The reason for destroying it before it finishes is that you will get credit for both this achievement and If You Build It. If you do it this way, you will get both achievements at the same time!
Tip: This achievement is only for teleporter entrances, not the exits. Regardless, destroying the exits is good for business too!
Doctoring the Ball
Kill 3 enemies while under the effects of a Medic’s übercharge.
This one sort of ties into the Medic achievement You’ll Feel A Little Prick, as any Medic that makes a scout invulnerable for this achievement will get that one as well. It’s rare for a Medic to über a Scout in normal play, but in extreme cases it does happen. If you do get the über, go crazy and start the slaughter! Also, this achievement will trigger Bedside Manner if the Medic does not already have it, netting him two achievements.
To farm this one, you’ll need at least 4 friends. Have one join you as Medic and the others play enemy team Scouts. Build up an über, trigger it, and mow down the Scouts to get the achievement and possibly get your Medic friend his achievement as well.
Tip: While it doesn’t say, all 3 kills must be in a single übercharge.
Dodgers 1, Giants 0
Kill an enemy Heavy and take his Sandvich.
This one is pretty simple, especially if you already have the Sandman. Simply kill an enemy Heavy while he is eating a Sandvich. You can tell if he is eating be the “OM NOM NOM” noises he broadcasts whenever he sits down to enjoy a snack. If you have the Sandman, you can make this really easy by simply stunning the Heavy before killing him. Farming it is much the same way, only get a friend to stand still for you before slaughtering him while he eats. Keep in mind that the Heavy doesn’t have to be eating the Sandvich, just holding it.
Tip: This achievement title is obviously a reference to the Scout and Heavy being sports teams. In this case, the Scout is the LA Dodgers and the Heavy is the San Francisco Giants.
Fall Classic
Cause an environmental death or suicide using the Force-A-Nature’s knockback.
As this achievement requires the Force-A-Nature, it must be done after achieving 10 other unlocks. That being said, the Force-A-Nature has a lot of knockback when it hits an opponent, easily sending them towards their deaths if you are playing on a particularly treacherous map. Take advantage of this to do things such as push enemies into hazardous waste or push snipers off perches. If one dies, you’ll get this achievement!
The farm this achievement, simply whack on a friend until he’s low enough to die from combined fall damage and Force-A-Nature damage. Then simply blast him off a cliff. There you go! You now have the achievement. Relatively easy to farm. It just requires you have the Force-A-Nature unlocked.
Tip: Yet another sports reference! In this case, the Fall Classic is a name by sportswriters for the World Series.
First Blood
Get the first kill in an Arena match.
As a Scout, you will always be first on the scene. This is the same in Arena as it is in other modes. Simply try your best to get the first kill of the round to get this achievement. If you die, there is always next round, so simply try again and again until you get the achievement. A relatively easy one to get by most standards.
To farm this, have a friend willing to sacrifice himself to you at the start of an Arena match. This works best if he is a Scout, as it will let him reach you before the other palyers start killing each other. simply blast him away to get the achievement!
Tip: First Blood is also a buff that affects whoever gets the first kill in an Arena round. It gives them guaranteed criticals for a short while, which ties into the following achievement…
First Blood, Part 2
Kill 5 enemies with the First Blood crit buff.
Exactly as it says. You must kill 5 enemies while under the effects of the First Blood crit buff in any Arena match. This doesn’t have to be all at once, but you may as well get it done as quickly as possible, as getting First Blood again can be a pain.
To farm this, you need the cooperation of pretty much the entire enemy team. You’ll need at least 6 on the enemy team: one to trigger the buff, and 5 to act as victims. Once you kill them all, you’ll get the achievement. Unlike pretty much every other achievement, you can’t farm this with just you and one other friend. It requires large-scale cooperation.
Tip: While this achievement is also a continuation of the previous one, it is also a reference to the second Rambo movie, which was titled Rambo: First Blood Part II.
Foul Territory
Cause an environmental death by stunning an enemy.
This one may seem a little difficult at first, considering that it’s a little hard to fall to your death when you can’t move. However, there is another way. Simply stun someone on train tracks as the train is approaching. They will be splattered across the landscape, and you’ll net this fine achievement with little hassle. Farming is done pretty much exactly the same way, except have a friend stand there on purpose.
Tip: Foul territory is the ground outside a foul line in baseball. If a ball lands in this area, it is considered a foul.
Gun Down
Destroy an active sentry gun using your pistol.
Oh boy. Talk about hard achievements to get. In normal play, this achievement will be nearly impossible. You certainly can’t take an active sentry alone for long, and if the engineer is around there is no way you can destroy it as he’ll just fix your damage. The best way to do this is to work with a Demoman to destroy it. As long as the pistol is the last weapon to damage the gun, you will get the achievement.
To farm this, have an engineer build a gun around a corner so that it can’t see you but you can see the struts. Proceed to destroy the struts with your trusty pistol while the Engineer stands by. You can also weaken the sentry with a shotgun as long as you finish it off with the pistol.
If You Build It
Destroy 3 enemy buildings while they are still under construction.
This achievement requires you to be at the front of an assault pretty much before the enemy knows that you are there. It also requires you to catch the enemy engineers off guards so that you can destroy their precious buildings. Simply put, rush forward at the starting gun to begin the pain. Destroy any buildings you see!
To farm this, have an engineer start building a teleporter entrance, exit, and dispenser in front of you. As they are being built, destroy them. It’s an easy achievement to farm, especially since all it requires is a Scout, Engineer, and secluded place. No sentry gun is required, so make sure that the engineer does not build one.
Tip: Yet another baseball reference, If You Build It is a reference to the line “If you build it, they will come.” from Field of Dreams.
I’m Bat Man
Survive 500 damage in one life.
Well this achievement in interesting. For reference, the Scout has 125 health, meaning that he has to survive 4 full deaths worth of damage to get this achievement. As a scout, you are not likely to have a medic attached to you, so there is only one course available: memorize where medpacks are. If you can make it to a medpack and heal up before you die, you’ll be able to continue this achievement. If you die before 500 points, you have to start over.
To get this achievement, have a medic friend heal you while an enemy medic shoots you. Simply survive 500 points of damage and then die afterwards to get the achievement. The syringe gun is good for this because of the high rate of fire but low damage. You do have to die in order to get the achievement, regardless of farming or normal methods.
Tip: In case you had not picked up up, the title of this achievement is a play on the comic character Batman, who is renowned for his ability to be prepared for and survive any situation.
Moon Shot
Stun an enemy for the maximum possible duration by hitting them with a long-range ball.
This one is a relatively simple achievement to get, although it requires you to hit the ball launched by the Sandman. This means you must either get 15 achievements or knock the ball back with another bat or the air blast. Simply put, launch the ball over a great distance. The farther the ball travels from you, the longer it will stun an enemy. If it stuns them for the maximum possible duration, you get the achievement! The only difference between farming this achievement and doing it normally is having a friend stand still for you.
No Hitter
Steal and then capture the enemy intelligence without firing a shot.
Now this one is hard to do in normal play. You have to do exactly what the achievement says. While you can go all the way up to the intelligence and steal it while blasting away, as soon as you touch the intel, you must not fire another shot until you have captured it. If you fire at all, you will have to try again, either by capping to reset the intel or dropping it. Also, keep in mind that you have to steal it from the pedestal, not from another player’s drop. You must travel the full distance in one go and without firing a shot.
To farm this, join an empty server with a buddy. Run to the intel, grab it, and run back without firing once. Easy achievement. The reason you need another player is because it won’t count the achievement unless the game has actually begun. This requires at least two players.
Out of the Park
Bat an enemy 25 meters.
This one… well, it’s different than you would expect. You would think that the achievement means 25 horizontal feet, but it is actually attainable with 25 vertical and horizontal feet. In other words, have fun knocking guys off of cliffs (or the 2fort balcony) with your bat! In order to count, you must kill the enemy player with the Sandman taunt, as it is the only bat to actually fling the player when they die.
In order to farm this, have a Scout get on the 2fort balconies for you to slam with your taunt. Then proceed to do so. Make sure you are facing out into the courtyard, as otherwise they will slam into a wall and lose you the achievement. After they travel 25 feet, you will gain the achievement.
Tip: Both the taunt and the title of this achievement is a reference to Babe Ruth’s (in)famous called shot against the Chicago Cubs.
Pop Fly
Kill 20 players while double-jumping.
Yet another baseball term! This achievement is probably one of the first ones you will get, given the Scout’s predilections to jumping around like a hyperactive rabbit. Simply jump a lot while you unleash the fury on your hapless opponents, and you will eventually get this achievement. We’re not sure if we really need to spell out farming this for you. Just jump around a lot and kill guys some more. It’s pretty much a win-win situation either way! For farming, though, make sure your friends are either just standing around or playing all Scouts for easy killing.
Tip: The kills only count after your double-jump, so make sure you have jumped twice before actually performing the kill. Otherwise it doesn’t count, and that sucks.
Quick Hook
Kill a player in Well before the round starts.
This one is going to be incredibly hard to get in normal play. So hard, in fact, that we suggest you just farm it. Trust us, it’ll save you a lot of grief and farming it is much simpler. To farm, simply have a friend stand against the grate in Well. Then stand against the grate yourself and perform the Sandman taunt. Bing bang boom, you’ve smashed him outta the park and you get another achievement. As the achievement says, you can only do this on Well, so don’t try on any other maps. It just won’t work!
Race for the Pennant
Run 25 kilometers.
It doesn’t matter whether or not you are farming this achievement or doing it regularly. It is the same either way. In short, run a lot. Run way more than you have or ever will run. This achievement is the grind-happy achievement for the Scout, and it shows. Just play a lot of Scout and you will get the achievement eventually. It will take quite a while, but eventually is a better possibility than never!
As an added remark, a custom map would be ideal for farming this, and probably the only time I will ever advocate using custom maps instead of regular ones. Simply put, create (or find) a map with a long hallway with a teleporter at the end that puts you back at the beginning. Bind your forward to the left mouse button and set something heavy on your mouse. Go to sleep. Come back, and if you do not have the achievement, repeat each night until you do. Not quite the same as normal farming, but whatever!
Tip: Air time does not count. The only time that counts is when you are on the ground.
Retire the Runner
Kill a Scout while they are snared by the post-dodge slowdown effect.
This one is fairly easy to get, both farming and normally. To get it normally, simply follow a Scout that you notice is under the Bonk! dodge effect. As soon as you see the effect wear off, go and kill them. They won’t have nearly as much mobility, making them unable to maneuver around you or dodge your shots. Blow one away and you get the achievement.
To farm this, get a buddy to drink Bonk! and have him run around in circles. After he slows down in his orbit, blast him away. Another easy achievement down the tubes. Easiest on a map where you can find a relatively isolated spot that has enough room for the Scout to run around.
Tip: Any class can do this achievement. You do not have to be the Scout.
Round Tripper
Capture the enemy intelligence 25 times.
Yet another achievement you should be able to get in normal play simply by playing the class as intended. The achievement is relatively self-explanatory. Grab the intel and capture it at your base 25 times over your career to unlock this very easy achievement. Well, easy if you play a Scout well. If you have trouble avoiding enemy fire, you might have troubles.
To farm this achievement, create a server for a friend to join, and set the capture limit to 26. This is best if your friend needs the achievement too. Now run back and forth until each of you has captured the intel 25 times. Both snag the achievement and both walk away happy. It’s a win-win! You might work on another achievement, such as No Hitter, while farming this particular achievement. It can get a little tedious.
Tip: You only have to capture the intel, which means someone can do the initial steal, bring it to you, and let you finish capping for the achievement.
Set the Table
Initiate 10 point captures that ultimately succeed.
Do we really need to explain this one? As a Scout, you should be first on the control point in all situations in the first place. Simply stay on a control point until it is captured and move on. You have to be the first person on the point, but considering that you are the fastest class in the game, this should not be an issue. Just do your job and all will be fine. You’ll get credit and you’ll capture the point, furthering your team’s goals.
You may want to repeat the same tactic as the last achievement with this one, only on a control point map. Simple hop on a control point, capture it, and then let your friend (who is also hopefully doing the achievement) capture it back. Repeat until the two of you have accumulated 10 captures. Easy, if time-consuming. Some custom maps do have fast capture times, so you might consider playing on those maps as well as normal maps.
Tip: You only have to be the one to do the initial capture. If you begin the capture and someone kills you, you will still get credit if your team manages to capture the point. So give it your all!
Strike Zone
Kill 50 enemies while they are stunned.
Interestingly enough, as you may note in the description, it says kill 50 stunned enemies, not stun 50 enemies and then kill them. This means that this is the only stun achievement that you can perform without having the Sandman. To do this normally, simply watch for when a Scout stuns an enemy and kill him. Each kill you get will further the achievement progress until it is unlocked!
To farm this, you should acquire the Sandman first. After getting the Sandman, proceed to whack the hell out of a friend with the ball and then beat him to death. If you do it right, you might even be able to taunt kill him, which can lead to other achievements. A simple farm, if long.
Side Retired
Capture the last point in a CP map.
You might get this achievement on accident! It’s common fro a Scout to sit on the last point of a map as their team advances. This way, the game ends extremely quickly upon the capture of the second-to-last point, allowing the next round to be played. If you want this achievement, simply be that final Scout. As long as you are present on the point when it is captured, you will get credit and subsequently this achievement.
To farm this, join am empty server with one other friend doing the achievement. Have him let you cap all the points in order so that you get the achievement, and then you do the same for him. Pretty standard farming for the mode-specific achievements, it seems. Nobody else is required!
Stealing Home
Start capping a capture point within a second of it becoming available.
The easiest way to do this achievement normally is, funnily enough, the same way you do Side Retired. Simply stay on the last point as your team is capturing the point before it. With any luck, you will stay alive long enough to start capturing it and finish, netting you both achievements at once. This does not have to be the last point; any locked point works for this achievement as long as you start capturing as soon as it is available.
To farm this, get two friends in with you on an empty control points server. Have one friend capture points as you stand on the last point. As soon as he finishes capturing the point before the last, you will begin capturing the final point and finish, getting Stealing Home and Side Retired for your troubles. The second friend is so that the game sees the match as going on.
Tip: Stealing is an action in baseball, and stealing home nets the batting team one point.
The Big Hurt
Stun 25 ÜberCharged enemies.
This achievement is just a matter of time as soon as you get the Sandman. Keep the Sandman equipped and play the game as normal. When an übered enemy runs to you, smack them with a ball and stun them, taking the time to run away. You can stun both the Medic and the person they are übercharging. This will count as two stuns for purposes of the achievement.
Farming this takes a significant amount of time, even in optimal conditions. Get two friends to play on the enemy team: one as a Demoman, and one as a Medic with the Kritzkrieg. Have the Medic deploy the über when he can, and stun both of them when it triggers. Hit them 25 times to net yourself another achievement.
Tip: Critcharge counts for this achievement, and the 25% charge bonus on the Kirtzkrieg helps immensely with farming.. So do enemies that are no longer stunned, if the stun breaks before the über wears off.
The Cycle
In a single life, kill an enemy while you are on the ground, in the air, and in the water.
An achievement of middling difficulty, The Cycle’s only claim to fame is that you must do all of these in one life. Our suggestion is to play 2fort. Kill a person in the middle, double-jump to kill a person on the bridge roof or somewhere in the middle grounds, and then fall into the water to net your third kill. The only difference between doing this achievement normally is having a friend help you or not. If you are farming, get a friend to play the martyr for you!
Tip: Crouching in knee-high water counts as being in the water, so crouching in the sewers in 2fort also counts towards this achievement.
Triple Play
Capture three capture points in a row in one life.
This one can be incredibly hard doing normally, as chances are you will not survive to push forward in a random public server team. It’s highly suggested that you get together a team of clanmates or friends to help do this. Simply choose a control point map with 5 points and steamroll the opposition, making sure you stay alive the whole time and capture each of the three points.
To farm this achievement, do it much the same way you did Side Retired. Get a friend to join the opposite team, and capture all the control points, including the last one. As soon as you get them all, you get the achievement and potentially Side Retired as well! Aren’t you sick of doing this?
Triple Steal
Capture the enemy intelligence 3 times in a single CTF round.
Thankfully, this does not have to be in a single life. Simply put, just capture the intel 3 times, which amounts to a team winning on most servers. You can be the one to steal it, or you can snag it from a dead friend. As long as you capture it 3 times before the end of the round, you get the achievement. You might want to play on a server with a larger amount of required captures, as others will no doubt be trying for this achievement as well.
Once again, the standard empty server scenario. Get in, capture the intel three times, get out. As always, it helps if your friend is doing it to, so that way you can help him snag his achievement by letting him cap your intel. Can be done with relative ease alongside the other CTF achievements like No Hitter.
An easier way to get the Foul Territory achievement is to play Defense on any Payload map where the bomb explodes at the end and stun an enemy as they’re about to make the final capture. When the bomb explodes and kills them you’ll get the achievement if they’re still stunned.
Thanks for sending this! We’ll add accordingly 😀
