NVIDIA’s GTC 2021 has just concluded with some major announcements for enterprise, data centers and AI as well as the green giant’s other projects but NVIDIA’s most noteworthy news for consumers would their new Grace CPU. This marks the beginning of a direct CPU rivalry between Intel, AMD and NVIDIA that would start at the HPC market segment.
The announcement sent NVIDIA shares up by 4% on Tuesday with Intel and AMD dropping at 4%. All three companies has had recent problems with chip shortages and supply issues and the problem will continue to persist based on recent reports.
“The result of more than 10,000 engineering years of work, the NVIDIA Grace CPU is designed to address the computing requirements for the world’s most advanced applications, including natural language processing, recommender systems and AI supercomputing,” – Nvidia
As NVIDIA’s Grace CPU will be targeting data centers first, Intel is the main contender here who enjoys a large share of the market. AMD has been rising in adoption with their Epyc CPUs. With NVIDIA joining in, it will be curious to see how this would affect the market behavior down the line especially with NVIDIA having a vast solutions library in their port folio which includes AI technologies.
It is still early on but mainstream consumers are already speculating NVIDIA’s direction especially if they would compete in the x86 mainstream desktop and laptop market where AMD and Intel have a duopoly.
